There could be small stones, or there may be bigger stones that can occur once in a while – causing severe pain if they rub along the side of the gallbladder. The bile material is the thing that causes gallstones to form —most of the stones consist of cholesterol.

Gallstones are hardened deposits that settle in the gallbladder.

We start our article by providing an update from one of our patients – Meena Kumari.

“I seem to get a repulsive pain from the gallstones in the lower part of my ribs, which then transmits to my back. Some weight on my stomach made me feel bad. I threw up and could barely inhale because of agony. Curling myself in the form of a ball used to support me a little bit. When I had horrible pain, I raised myself for a moment, curled myself into a ball before I was able to fall asleep. I was still trying to warm.

What is your gallbladder, and what does it do?

The gallbladder is one of the many organs that control the mechanism of digestion. The gallbladder is located just below the liver on the right side of the middle portion below the ribs. The liver creates a liquid called bile, which allows the small intestine to break down fat from food, much like fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Bile consists of cholesterol, bilirubin, and bile salts.

The gallbladder, a small pear-shaped organ, discharges bile during mealtimes to help the body to digest fats.

If the body is not constantly digesting, such as overnight or during meals, the gallbladder stores bile. The gallbladder may be affected by a few possible health conditions. Anything that prevents the natural flow of bile to and from the gallbladder can lead to health problems.

  • Infection
  • Tumors
  • Inflammation of the gallbladder
  • Gallbladder cancer
  • Gallstones which cause symptoms

TYPES:

Gallbladder attacks take place when gallstones obstruct bile ducts. However, in order to understand what triggers a gallbladder attack, we need to analyze what causes gallstones to develop. There are three varieties of gallstones.

  1. Cholesterol gallstones-generally made up of undissolved cholesterol that bonds together to form a stone.
  2. Pigment gallstones-are mostly dark brown or black and occur when bile contains a lot of bilirubin that the body releases when it breaks down the red blood cells.
  3. Mixed gallstones-brown pigment stones with 20 percent cholesterol and 80 percent other natural constituents such as calcium carbonate, bilirubin, and other bile pigments.

CAUSES:

Gallstones may occur in those with a family history of gallstones or gallbladder attacks and a blood condition such as sickle cell disease. However, some of the most important risk factors are:

  • Overweight or obese
  • Pregnant
  • Diabetic
  • Losing weight rapidly
  • Having a family history of gallstones
  • Female, over 40 years of age
  • Eating a diet that has high fat or cholesterol

SYMPTOMS:

At a point where gallstones obstruct the bile duct, you will feel the following symptoms:

  • High fever, Vomiting, and Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Indigestion and stomach pain
  • Heartburn
  • Rapid pulse
  • Loose solid discharges
  • Rashes on the skin
  • Jaundice (the skin and eyes get yellowish)
