Aortic valve stenosis, also known as aortic stenosis, is a condition in which the aortic valve of the heart is narrowed. The valve is unable to open fully, which reduces or entirely blocks the blood flow from heart to the main artery of the entire body (aorta), and the flow towards the rest of the body. The symptoms of this condition are- abnormal heart sound, chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitations, etc. The causes of aortic valve stenosis are- congenital heart defects, calcium buildup on the valve, rheumatic fever, heart infections, chronic kidney disease, etc.
Aortic valve stenosis comes under the category of Hridaya roga of ayurveda. This condition is caused due to vitiation of Vata and Kapha dosha. The movement of Rakta dhatu is governed by Vata dosha, and as the movement is obstructed, the cause is Vata dushti. Further, the seat of kapha dosha is chest; and the narrowing of the valve is associated with the accumulation of Kapha dosha in the valve, which resists the flow of blood through it.
Thus, the treatment of aortic valve stenosis in ayurveda focuses on elimination of the root cause of the condition, which in this case is vitiation of doshas and accumulation of ama in the valve. The treatment follows initial fasting and the panchakarma procedures. These together help in eliminating toxins from the body and avoid further accumulation of the same. Further, the procedure is accompanied with intake of herbs that are Cardiology-strengthening like Arjuna, Go-ghrita, nala and nagbala, yashtimadhu, haldi, dalchini, etc. During the treatment, the patient is suggested a well-balanced diet and exercise regimen, that helps to pacify the effects of vitiated doshas and boost metabolism, which enhances the rejuvenation process. This line of treatment helps in reversal of the condition in a holistic way.

“The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment giving importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease.”
“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”
