Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which a person interprets reality abnormally and this may result in combination of hallucinations, delusions and disordered thinking. ‘Sannipataha Unmada’ is the ayurvedic term for schizophrenia. This problem is caused due to certain brain chemicals which include neurotransmitters like dopamine and glutamate. This impairment of chemicals is due to vitiation of doshas, especially vata dosha, which is responsible for carrying the signals from body to brain and from brain to body. This impaired movements of vata, along with accumulation of toxins in the channels (srotas), lead to the disease. It can be caused due to genetic defect, malnutrition or due to birth defects.
The management of schizophrenia according to ayurveda consists of therapies like Snehapana, Virechana, Nasya, Vasti Karma, Dhumrapana and Anjana. These therapies help in detoxifying the body and channels to ease out ama from the body. The treatment is also accompanied by intake of Mandukaparni, Yastimadhu, Guduchi, and Shankhpushpi drugs. This treatment also required psychiatric counseling and worship enchanting, that enables a person’s brain to get restored and get stabilized. Treatment of schizophrenia in ayurveda

Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Psychotic symptoms:

  1. Hallucinations: This is a condition in which a person sees, hears, smells, tastes or feels things that are not actually there. Amongst these, hearing voices are very common in people having schizophrenia.
  2. Delusions: This is a condition in which a person believes something very strongly that is very irrational to others. They may believe that they are in danger or that others are trying to hurt them; they may start noticing the messages via radio and television that are completely irrational.
  3. Thought disorder: This is a condition in which a person has ways of thinking unusual or illogical. They have trouble in organizing their thoughts and speech, and may usually jump in the middle of conversation, stop talking or jump from topic to topic.
  4. Movement disorder: This is a condition in which a person does abnormal body movements, and may repeat certain motions over and over.

Negative symptoms:

  1. Have trouble in planning and sticking to a plan made
  2. Having trouble in feeling pleasure in life
  3. Usually talking in dull voice and less facial expressions
  4. Introverts, and interact in socially awkward ways
  5. Least in terms of energy
  6. Spending lots of time on passive activities.

Cognitive symptoms:

  1. Having problems in processing information and decision making
