Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which a person interprets reality abnormally and this may result in combination of hallucinations, delusions and disordered thinking. ‘Sannipataha Unmada’ is the ayurvedic term for schizophrenia. This problem is caused due to certain brain chemicals which include neurotransmitters like dopamine and glutamate. This impairment of chemicals is due to vitiation of doshas, especially vata dosha, which is responsible for carrying the signals from body to brain and from brain to body. This impaired movements of vata, along with accumulation of toxins in the channels (srotas), lead to the disease. It can be caused due to genetic defect, malnutrition or due to birth defects.
The management of schizophrenia according to ayurveda consists of therapies like Snehapana, Virechana, Nasya, Vasti Karma, Dhumrapana and Anjana.
