HS is more than just a skin condition. It can be harmful to your health in a number of ways.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a skin condition that causes microscopic, painful lumps beneath the skin in specific areas of the body. While the lumps may heal on their own over time, they regularly reappear, causing tunnels under the skin and scarring. HS can be crushing and devastating for those who suffer from it.

“‘[The] painful nodules, bumps, and/or boils typically [occur] in the armpits, breast, or groyne area,” explains Dr. Adil Moulanchikkal, Lead Ayurveda Specialist at EliteAyurveda Clinics. “These can be excruciatingly painful, and they drain a foul-smelling fluid.” Unfortunately, because HS is less well-known and commonly misdiagnosed, people may go for years without receiving appropriate treatment.”

According to the Academy of Dermatology Association, some people with HS go undiagnosed for 12 years or more.

What Is the Cause of Hidradenitis Suppurativa?

It is unknown what causes HS, although risk factors appear to include anything from hormones and family history/genetics to cigarette smoking and obesity. Individuals in their 20s and 30s are more likely to have HS than other age groups, as are women when compared to men. According to leading experts, a person’s race or ethnicity may also influence their odds of having it.

One thing scientists do know is that the sickness is linked to other serious health issues. “We don’t know why, but HS is associated with other conditions like obesity, metabolic syndrome, and Crohn’s disease,” Dr. Adil says. “In addition, because HS is a hair follicle disorder, it frequently coexists with other related disorders, such as acne conglobata and dissecting cellulitis of the scalp.”

Hidradenitis Suppurativa – Medical Concerns:

While much is unknown about HS, we do know that it can increase your chances of acquiring other possibly fatal health problems. Here are six of the most critical to be aware of.

1. Metabolic condition

HS appears to be connected with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, a combination of illnesses that usually occur concurrently (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, extra body fat around the waist, high cholesterol or triglycerides). According to a review published in the International Journal of Dermatology in May 2019, a study investigating the possible link between HS and metabolic syndrome indicated a strong association.

If untreated, metabolic syndrome can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. While there are several techniques to treating metabolic syndrome, adopting lifestyle changes such as eating a healthier diet and increasing physical activity may help reduce the likelihood of significant complications.

2. Spondyloarthritis

This type of arthritis primarily affects the spine, but it can also affect the arms and legs, as well as the skin, intestines, and eyes in some people. According to study, people who have this condition are more prone to get HS. A study found that HS was more common in the group than in the overall population.

The most frequent symptom of axial spondyloarthritis is lower back pain, however some people also have swelling in their arms and legs. The illness’s treatment varies, but may include medication, physical therapy, exercise, and dietary changes.

3. Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD)

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to a group of disorders marked by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. The two most frequent types are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

IBD symptoms include diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, weight loss, and tiredness, and treatment may involve medications, nutritional support, and, in rare cases, surgery.

In July 2019, a systematic review of large-scale studies published in the journal JAMA Dermatology showed a significant relationship between HS and the risk of IBD in patients. Based on their findings, the study authors advised people with HS to see a gastroenterologist if they experience persistent symptoms such as diarrhoea, bloody stool, or abdominal pain.

4. Cardiovascular illness

There are numerous types of heart disease and causes of cardiovascular death, but research has indicated that HS is associated with significantly increased risks of unfavourable cardiovascular events such as stroke, heart attack, and death. In a study published in the journal JAMA Dermatology in November 2019, researchers discovered that having HS significantly increased the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Treatment for heart disease varies widely from case to case, however in some cases, lifestyle adjustments and medicines, as well as medical procedures or operations, may be required.

5. Anxiety and depression

Visible skin disorders can be emotionally taxing and contribute to feelings of worthlessness, shame, and social isolation. According to a study published in the International Journal of Dermatology in August 2021, this may increase the risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide ideation, as well as have a poor influence on overall quality of life.

According to a review of ten studies published in the journal JAMA Dermatology in June 2019, depression and anxiety are common among people with HS. Given this link, the researchers recommend developing strategies to manage mental health illnesses related with HS.

6, sexual dysfunction

There are many different types of sexual dysfunction, but the term usually refers to any disorder that prevents a person or couple from having sexual fulfilment.

A study published in the journal Dermatology in August 2019 found that patients with HS have a very high rate of sexual dysfunction. According to the findings, being in a stable relationship appears to protect women with HS from developing sexual dysfunction, signalling that the problem may be associated with disease activity, active lesions, and other symptoms.

Treatment for sexual dysfunction is based on the underlying cause and circumstances, as both medical and psychological variables may be at play; nevertheless, root cause treatment may be useful.

Treat HS as soon as possible.

Despite the fact that HS can affect much more than your skin, consulting with a doctor who specialises in the illness is a good place to start. “Skin Specialists are trained to recognise, diagnose, and treat hidradenitis suppurativa,” Dr. Adil explains. “With the correct diagnosis, we can appropriately manage it to prevent the progression and worsening of HS, relieve pain, and reduce scarring.”

You can then work to develop a more comprehensive treatment plan, which may include the involvement of additional healthcare experts to assist you in treating related disorders.

While HS is still not fully understood, experts anticipate that new research will give relief to individuals suffering with it in the future. “While there is still much we do not know about HS, there has been a lot of research in the last several years,” Dr. Adil says. “Fortunately, we have made several breakthroughs that have resulted in a wide range of treatment options for this condition.” “We hope that more people become aware of this issue so that they can seek treatment sooner and reduce its impact on their quality of life.”

When the digestive fire (Agni), or Pitta, is out of equilibrium, the Kapha Dosha becomes vitiated, causing metabolism to slow down.
