Some people get a sudden flare-up of Hidradenitis Suppurativa. There are, however, hints for others. Prodrome is the medical word for these symptoms.

A prodrome is a group of signs and symptoms that occur prior to a flare-up. It is commonly connected with migraine or epilepsy, but it can also occur in a variety of other conditions. According to a 2017 assessment of 72 HS patients, 83% exhibited symptoms previous to an episode. In a 2014 study, 50% of patients had prodromal symptoms 12-48 hours before a lesion was visible.

As a result, we know that a considerable number of people show indicators of an imminent flare. You may not have realised you had other conditions in addition to HS. However, knowing ahead of time might help you prepare. The following are some of the most common symptoms.

Fatigue

Fatigue is a common complaint among people with HS. It affects a large number of people with HS both during and before an episode. According to the 2017 study, 32% of patients noticed weariness before to an episode. Inflammation, according to some experts, saps your vigour. Your body uses available energy to tackle inflammation, which causes exhaustion. This could explain your exhaustion while your body fights the flare-up.

Soreness and discomfort

A flare may start with pain for some people. You may feel discomfort on its own or in conjunction with a lump. For some, it is tenderness, while for others, it is a wound. Pain and discomfort, regardless of how they develop, may be the earliest signs of a flare-up; 74% of those studied experienced erythema. Erythema is a swollen, painful patch of skin caused by blood vessel irritation. This could explain why some HS passengers are uncomfortable upon boarding. Erythema is associated with infection and, in certain circumstances, a drug reaction. Consult a doctor if you encounter this symptom. They might be able to help in this situation.

Headaches

Prior to an outbreak, 11% of those studied had migraines. A fever with headaches may indicate an illness. They are also connected with inflammation. Both of these are common HS symptoms.

Tingling and itching

Twenty percent of individuals in that 2017 research reported irritation prior to an epidemic. Itching can occur anywhere there is a lesion. Commonly affected areas include the underarms, quadriceps, and buttocks.

Paraesthesia is the medical name for tingling, prickling, or paralysis induced by nerve pressure. 63% of individuals had paraesthesia prior to a flare-up.

Periods

Your menstruation may or may not be considered an indication, but it is a predictor. Many women endure HS flare-ups before their menstruation. As a result, if you know your period is near, you may also experience a flare-up.  Doctors feel that hormones are critical to understanding HS. They do not, however, understand the relationship. HS is more common in women, with many symptoms appearing during puberty. HS symptoms frequently change during pregnancy, in addition to premenstrual symptoms. Those who have flare-ups during their cycle are not alone. Similarly to making sure you have enough padding, make sure your HS kit is well-stocked each month.

Everyone to their own

As always, I’d like to underline that everyone’s HS experience is unique. You may not have any of these symptoms prior to a flare-up. Or you might realise you’ve had them all. A second possibility is that HS will interact with other situations. We know that HS increases the risk of other conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.  Many of these symptoms, such as weariness and migraines, are vague. Consult a doctor if these symptoms continue and are causing you problems.  Your doctor can rule out alternative causes in addition to providing advice and therapy. Your prodrome could disclose more than you think. As a result, always have your eyes tested!

When the digestive fire (Agni), or Pitta, is out of equilibrium, the Kapha Dosha becomes vitiated, causing metabolism to slow down.
