Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is well known for the physical symptoms it causes, which range from small, painful lumps under the skin to massive abscesses that can rupture.

A lesser-known fact: Your hidradenitis suppurativa may be interfering with your life in ways other than the skin, notably your energy levels, as fatigue is one of the most commonly reported symptoms, affecting roughly 40% of HS patients.

Fighting the feelings of chronic tiredness makes dealing with the daily symptoms of your skin disease more challenging. So, what is the good news? Managing the fatigue induced by your hidradenitis suppurativa may complement your existing HS treatment plan. Indeed, “better clinical control of HS (meaning compliance with treatments and prompt management of flares) often leads to less fatigue,” according to Dr. Adil. That’s a no-lose situation!

Starting to address your weariness, according to Dr. Adil, is easier than you would think. The first step is to evaluate whether your weariness is a normal part of your condition or an indication of something else wrong. This will get you ready for fast relief and more energy.

Here are some reasons why you could be tired and drained on a daily basis, as well as practical methods for dealing with it.

You’re fatigued because an HS flare-up is just around the corner.

“Fatigue is one of the most common signs of a looming flare-up episode,” explains Dr. Tripathy. “During the prodromal stage [a.k.a. a set of symptoms that occur before a flare strikes], it’s either skin sensitivity or fatigue as the first warning sign before the symptoms of HS appear.” Inflammation in the body, according to researchers, limits cellular energy availability. In other words, your body expends all of its energy fighting inflammation, leaving you with little energy to do other things.

You are weary as a result of stress or anxiety.

Stressing about the appearance and feel of your skin has an influence not just on your mental health, but it may also contribute to fatigue. Here’s why: When you’re in a stressful situation (for example, an HS flare makes it difficult to move), your body produces more fight-or-flight hormones. The response engages all bodily systems to keep you safe in what it perceives to be a dangerous situation. “The mental toll that HS takes can cause anxiety, leading to fatigue and restlessness,” explains Dr. Adil. That is why he advocates for yoga or meditation: “Clarity in thought and emotion can help you avoid the blues.”

You are exhausted because you are overweight.

According to a study released in 2021 by the Society for Investigative Dermatology, obese adults are two to six times more likely to be diagnosed with HS. Obesity, according to experts, is unlikely to cause HS, but it may aggravate it, increasing your fatigue. “Losing weight can help you boost your energy,” advises Dr. Adil. In addition, “reducing body fat helps your body better metabolise food and maximise energy for your body.”

You’re fatigued because you don’t exercise often.

“A healthy amount of weight loss is often beneficial for many disease processes, including HS, as well as the symptoms that stem from them, such as fatigue,” Dr. Adil says. Exercise, on the other hand, can assist you overcome fatigue if you are not overweight. According to a study published in Psychological Bulletin, regular exercise enhances energy more than stimulant medications. Dr. Adil suggests 30-60 minutes of exercise per day to keep your body healthy: “Cardio-based exercises like swimming, running, walking, and aerobic exercise will help you increase your energy level and prevent HS flares in the long run,” he says.

If you are tired, you may have sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which a person’s natural breathing repeatedly stops and begins. Dr. Adil claims that “being overweight can affect sleep apnea, which directly affects daily fatigue.”

You’re exhausted because your skin is irritated or painful.

Skin sensitivity is one of the first signs of HS, but it could also be the result of a local infection. “Itchy or sore lesions can keep you awake at night,” Dr Adil continues, and “when the lesions become infected, the body’s overload in antibodies to fight off the infection can also cause the body to feel run down.” Apply a warm compress to the affected area or dab a small bit of aloe vera gel on hot, irritated lumps to soothe your skin (immediately!). Here are a few more home remedies recommended by dermatologists.

You’re fatigued because your diet is abundant in processed foods.

Adopting a clean diet, according to Dr. Adil, will help reduce breakouts and weariness if you have HS. Glazed donuts are a processed food that causes a transient increase in insulin and blood sugar, giving you a rapid energy boost followed by an energy crash. Instead, snack on anti-inflammatory whole foods like grapes, walnuts, and broccoli. Your skin and the snooze button will thank you.
