Ayurvedic Perspective on Fibromyalgia-

A variety of variables contribute to the chronic pain and heightened sensitivity associated with fibromyalgia. It’s not always the case that these factors are the same for everyone. Ayurveda, on the other hand, maintains that an increase in Vata dosha (due to margavarodha) and a buildup of Ama (toxins) are the true culprits of fibromyalgia.

The Ayurvedic term for this type of ailment is vtavydhi (diseases predominantly brought on by vitiated Vta Dosha). Vtavydhi is a complex disorder that primarily affects the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, but may also have an effect on other tissues over time. Pain, stiffness, contracture, weariness, slow loss of movement, and mental disturbance are all noted as possible and variable manifestations in ancient texts. Similarities between this and the modern definition of fibromyalgia are remarkable.

The pathogenic process of disease begins in the digestive tract (anna vaha srota) and progresses via the middle channels, with a predilection for the muscular tissues (mamsa dhatu) and the channels that correspond to them in the sheesha sthana. The inability of affected muscles to tolerate even mild touch is diagnostic of the disease (sparshasahyata). The condition has a chronic course, and patients grow gradually incapacitated due to fatigue, loss of appetite, body heaviness, nausea, and intermittent fever.

Fibromyalgia therapy calls for perseverance on the part of the sufferer, and this is something that should be mentioned beforehand.

Before beginning treatment for fibromyalgia, patients are informed that a degree of patience is required.

— Allopathic approach

Traditional allopathic medicine considers fibromyalgia is incurable at present.

Instead, treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life through the use of medication, self-care strategies, and behavioral modifications. Although they don’t treat the underlying issue, they help alleviate some of the disorder’s symptoms.

The use of medication can alleviate discomfort and promote restful sleep. Some of the most commonly given medications for fibromyalgia are pain relievers, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants.

Opioids are a class of medications used to treat pain, reduce discomfort, and help with disease management. Maybe, these would lead to an even more restful night’s sleep.

Inflammation is also reduced by many of them. Inflammation is not a typical symptom of fibromyalgia, however, conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can bring on the condition.

Keep in mind that NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, might cause side effects (NSAIDs). Extreme caution is advised when taking NSAIDs for an extended period of time, as is sometimes necessary when addressing a chronic pain issue.

Doctors have also relied on opioids as a means of pain management. The effectiveness of these methods, however, has not been proven in scientific studies. Increasing the dosage of opioids too rapidly can be dangerous for the patient.

The antiseizure medicine pregabalin (Lyrica) was the first treatment prescribed by doctors for fibromyalgia. It stops nerve cells from transmitting pain signals.

Although gabapentin (Neurontin) was initially developed for the management of epileptic seizures, it has shown promise in the management of fibromyalgia symptoms as well. Due to the lack of FDA authorization for its use in treating fibromyalgia, gabapentin is considered an off-label medicine.

Milnacipran (Savella) and duloxetine, two antidepressants, are sometimes used to alleviate the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia (Cymbalta). By influencing neurotransmitters, these medications may also improve slumber.

As for the other treatments, they have been shown to temporarily alleviate symptoms and are available.

Therapies such as acupuncture, massage, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one approach to dealing with stressful situations (CBT).
