Common HS Complications (and How to Handle Them)

Not everyone with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) may experience complications. Some people who develop this painful skin condition are still in the early stages, with only a few pus-filled lumps and minor difficulties. Others suffer from a more serious condition, with tunnels linking many under-the-skin lesions that drip fluid and leave extensive scarring. However, regardless of the stage of the disease, you may regulate and minimize your symptoms so that you can thrive.

With HS, your body reacts inappropriately to common skin pathogens, causing inflammation of the skin and hair follicles. The goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation and halt disease progression. “The earlier and more aggressively we treat the disease to control it better, the less likely we are to see complications develop,” adds Dr. Adil. Follow the link to learn about some of the most prevalent problems and how to deal with them if they emerge.

Infection

“Infection is a major concern,” Dr. Adil says, recommending antimicrobial cleansers like neem soap or an epsom salt bath to minimize the bacterial burden and keep your skin from overreacting. “Many patients will tell you that they utilise bleach baths even if their doctor hasn’t recommended them. This is frequently utilised to aid in disease control.”

Scarring

Scars and tunnels (under-the-skin connected lesions) can form as a result of HS lesions. HS flares must be stabilized by lowering inflammation to reduce the risk of long-term scarring. It is essential to treat HS as soon as possible before the HS stage progresses…since scarring is most visible in stage 3.

Immobility

“I have patients who can’t lift up or use their arms because of the pain and limited range of motion,” says Dr. Adil about scarring. And I have other patients who have difficulty walking when their groins become irritated.” Researchers learned from HS patients that their thick, rope-like scars can be as mentally and physiologically damaging as active tumors.

Inflammation of the Genital Organs

According to Dr. Adil, scars can also obstruct the microscopic lymph passages that drain excess fluid from the skin, leading them to stop working. “This most commonly occurs in the genital area, resulting in mild to severe swelling of the labia or scrotum.” “The more you control the disease’s inflammation, the less it tends to go down over time,” he says. Ayurvedic remedies can help reduce inflammation.

Finding the exact reasons that worsen flares may also be beneficial. “We have patients who can say, for example, ‘I know when I eat dairy, I’m in pain,'” explains Dr Adil.

Pigmentation of the skin

“Skin discoloration is very common,” says Dr. Adil. “After a lesion has flared up, there may be temporary discoloration where the skin is either red or darker.” And it can take weeks to perfect each individual location.” Again, the approach is to use drugs and lifestyle adjustments to keep flares at bay. Small modifications, such as cutting back on soda, can help you lose weight. According to Dr. Adil, this can reduce the areas where your skin rubs together, especially in the groyne and beneath the breasts, which may contribute to the development of HS.

Scarring on the skin

“Scars can sometimes take the form of tiny pits around hair follicles.” “Those will frequently have little blackheads that build up and refill over time,” Dr Adil continues. “Some patients have a tendency to develop that type of scar and may thus have a lot of pitting.” “If the disease is active, it leaves these things in its wake.” “That means you have to calm down the disease in order to avoid these things,” he explains.

Carcinoma of the Skin

Chronically inflamed skin might progress to cancer. “Part of it has to do with how the cells turnover, how they react, so it’s not uncommon to see squamous cell cancers in more advanced HS, especially in chronic wounds,” explains Dr. Adil. If things change, make sure you’re being watched; this isn’t one of the more common HS issues, but it’s something to be aware of.

Comorbidities

You may also have diabetes, metabolic syndrome (a group of risk factors that includes high blood pressure, obesity, and high blood sugar), and inflammatory bowel disease if you have HS. The common denominator is inflammation. Because stress and processed foods can both induce inflammation, your treatment plan should include stress management as well as a healthy diet. Simply consider the big picture. “This is one of those diseases where the treatment is more like a marathon, not a sprint,” Dr. Adil says. “And it does take a lot of trial and error to help understand.”

Depression

“It’s distressing not to have control, where you wake up on any given day with pain and drainage and have to deal with this disease before you think of anything else,” Dr. Adil says. And I believe that knowing you are not alone in living with HS, as well as connecting with other people about coping strategies, can be helpful at times.”

Ayurvedic medicine considers hidradenitis suppurativa to be a cause of Kapha and Pitta dosha. When the digestive fire (Agni), or Pitta, is out of equilibrium, the Kapha Dosha becomes vitiated, causing metabolism to slow down. Because of the disturbance of fat molecules, they begin to accumulate in muscles and obstruct physiological passages, resulting in painful, swelling sores in the groyne, buttocks, thighs, and armpits.
