Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin condition characterised by the growth of painful lumps beneath the skin. Foods can have a significant impact on persons who have HS. The first thing a person should realise is that each individual has a unique body mechanism. As a result, just because one diet works for one person does not mean it will work for you. There is no recommended diet for the treatment of HS. Find out which foods are causing flare-ups and eliminate them before gradually reintroducing them.
Foods that promote inflammation or provoke an inflammatory response in the body are largely to blame for HS. As a result, avoiding foods that induce oxidative stress and hence inflammation in the body is an ideal choice.
- Sugary foods: Consuming sugary foods can elevate blood glucose levels, producing HS flare-ups.
- High-fat, processed red meat (hot dog, sausage and bacon): Saturated fat, which is abundant in processed meat, contributes significantly to inflammation.
- Saturated fats, which produce inflammation, are abundant in dairy products such as cow’s milk, cheese, cottage cheese, buttermilk, and butter. They can also cause an increase in hormone levels, which can contribute to HS. According to research, people who ate a dairy-free diet had fewer HS flare-ups.
- Deep-fried foods such as fries, fried chicken, and other deep-fried foods can induce an imbalance of omega-6s and omega-3s, which can contribute to inflammation.
- Wheat, rye, and barley all contain gluten, which can cause an autoimmune inflammatory reaction in certain people.
- Alcohol: Studies have shown that abstaining from alcohol lowers flare-ups in HS patients.
- Brewer’s yeast: According to study, brewer’s yeast may cause HS by activating your immune system. More evidence is required to demonstrate the same. However, it is best to avoid foods containing brewer’s yeast, such as beer, wine, certain soy sauces, canned or dried soups, pizza, bread, and cakes, salad dressings, and vinegar.
Some nutritional supplements
Some of the most effective diets for reducing HS flare-ups are as follows:
The Mediterranean diet, which contains fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, seafood, and extra virgin olive oil, has been shown to minimise HS flare-ups.
Plant-based vegan or vegetarian diets: Trillions of bacteria live in the human gut and work hard to keep us healthy. The more diverse a person’s microbes are, the healthier he or she is. Microorganisms are abundant in plant-based diets.
Anti-inflammatory diets include: Inflammation is the body’s natural defence response to any external substance that it views as potentially harmful. If the body does not eliminate inflammation, it may harm healthy cells. Anti-inflammatory foods, or anti-inflammatory meals, can reduce inflammation and minimise the chance of HS flare-ups.
Furthermore, supplements such as vitamin D and zinc aid in the prevention of HS flare-ups. Consult your doctor before utilising these supplements for HS therapy.

Hydradenitis suppurativa is a cause of Kapha and Pitta dosha, according to Ayurveda. When the digestive fire (Agni), or Pitta, is out of equilibrium, the Kapha Dosha becomes vitiated, causing metabolism to slow down. Because of the disturbance of fat molecules, they begin to accumulate in muscles and obstruct physiological passages, resulting in painful, swelling sores in the groin, buttocks, thighs, and armpits.
