How Does Our Cardiomyopathy Treatment Benefit You?

Cardiomyopathy is a condition in which it becomes difficult for heart muscles to pump blood to the rest of the body. If the condition is chronic, it leads to heart failure. Symptoms of cardiomyopathy are shortness of breath, bloating, fatigue cough while lying down, palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, etc. The causes of cardiomyopathy are chronic high blood pressure, problems with heart valves, metabolic disorders, lack of essential vitamins, pregnancy complications, connective tissue disorder, excessive intake of alcohol, etc.
Cardiomyopathy falls under the category of Hridaya Roga of ayurveda. It is caused due to dysfunction of rasa dhatu agni. The improper diet and stressful lifestyle leads to dhamani pratichaya (thickening of arteries) or dhamani kathinaya (hardening of arteries), resulting in the obstruction in the channels due to vitiation of Vata dosha. Heart failure is described as a tridoshaja vyadhi in Ayurveda. An imbalance of tridoshas in the heart muscle impairs cardiac function, whereas a significant disturbance in the balanced condition of tridoshas in the heart muscle causes serious heart failure.
The treatment of cardiomyopathy in ayurveda focuses on balancing the vitiated doshas and enhancing the rejuvenation process. This is brought in by therapies like snehana (external oleation), swedana (passive heat therapy), hrudaya dhara (concoction dripping treatment), abhyanga and basti (enema). Along with these therapies, certain herbs like Arjuna, dashmoola, negundo, ashwagandha, elaichi, etc. are suggested to pacify the effects of doshas and enhance elimination of toxins from the body. A proper diet and exercise regimen are also recommended to avoid any further accumulation and vitiation of doshas, and also to boost the metabolic fire. This line of treatment helps in complete reversal of the condition in a holistic way.

Types of Cardiomyopathy

  1. Dilated cardiomyopathy: The heart's primary pumping chamber, the left ventricle, becomes enlarged (dilated) and unable to properly pump blood out of the heart in this kind of cardiomyopathy. Although this variety can afflict people of all ages, it is most common in middle-aged persons and affects males more commonly. Coronary artery disease, sometimes known as a heart attack, is the most prevalent cause. It can, however, be caused by genetic alterations.
  2. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: This type involves abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, which makes the heart work harder. It mostly affects the muscle of the main pumping chamber of the heart (left ventricle). Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can occur at any age, however it is more severe when it begins in childhood. The majority of persons with this kind of cardiomyopathy have a family history of the condition. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has been linked to several genetic abnormalities.
  3. Restrictive cardiomyopathy: The heart muscle stiffens and becomes less flexible with this kind, making it unable to expand and fill with blood between heartbeats. This rare kind of cardiomyopathy can occur at any age, although it primarily affects the elderly. Restrictive cardiomyopathy can develop for no apparent reason (idiopathic) or as a result of another illness affecting the heart, such as amyloidosis.
  4. Right ventricular dysplasia caused by arrhythmia: Scar tissue replaces the muscle in the lower right heart chamber (right ventricle) in this rare kind of cardiomyopathy, which can cause cardiac rhythm abnormalities. It is frequently caused by genetic mutations.
  5. Unclassified cardiomyopathy: Other types of cardiomyopathy are categorized under this type.

Risk factors of cardiomyopathy

  1. Genetics
  2. Hypertension
  3. Ischemic cardiomyopathy
  4. Obesity
  5. Excessive consumption of alcohol
  6. Intake of drugs like cocaine, amphetamines and anabolic steroids.
  7. Chemotherapy drugs
  8. Medical conditions like diabetes, thyroid, amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, hemochromatosis, etc.

Complications associated with cardiomyopathy

  • Heart failure: The heart cannot pump enough blood to fulfil the demands of the Heart failure, if left untreated, can be fatal.
  • Blood clots: Blood clots may develop in the heart as a result of the heart's inability to pump properly. Clots that enter the circulation can obstruct blood flow to other organs, including the heart and brain.
  • Heart valve problems: Because cardiomyopathy causes the heart to expand, the cardiac valves may become dysfunctional. This can result in blood flowing backwards through the valve.
  • Sudden cardiac arrest and death: Cardiomyopathy can produce abnormal cardiac beats, which can lead to fainting or, in extreme circumstances, sudden death if the heart stops working properly.
