Why EliteAyurveda

How Does Our Dyslipidemia Treatment Benefit You?

Dyslipidemia is a condition in which there are abnormal levels of blood lipids that can be either high or low. This condition may include any abnormality in parameters like LDL cholesterol levels, HDL cholesterol levels, triglycerides, or combinations of these lipids. The causes of dyslipidemia are genetics, high/low fat & high sugar diet, liver disease, excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, intake of certain medications like oral contraceptives, antidepressants, etc.
According to ayurveda, dyslipidemia is a condition in which there are abnormal Medas/Snehas in the rakta dhatu. Medhas are the ashraya of Kapha dosha, which are carried by Vyana vata in the rasa-rakta vaha srotas. This leads to rasagata medas vriddhi, rasa rakta gata medas vriddhi, medovriddhi, Medoroga, etc. Agni, which is responsible for the metabolic activities, is responsible for increase or decrease in dosha, dhatu or mala. When there is vitiation in Agni, it leads to production of ama in the body, which then gets accumulated at abnormal sites; and when this ama gets accumulated in rakta & rasa, the process is called as leenatwa of ama in dhatus.
Thus, the treatment of dyslipidemia focuses on balancing the vitiated doshas and eliminating ama from the body. This is done by various therapies like Bahya rookshana, abhyantara rookshana, Shodhana chikitsa and shaman chikitsa. The treatment is also accompanied by intake of various herbs like shilajatu, guggulu, gomutra, chitraka, etc. These herbs help to pacify the effects of vitiated doshas and help eliminate the abnormal levels of lipids in the body. Further, nidhana parivarjana, dinacharya, ritucharya, and diet are suggested depending on persons’ body composition. This entire line of treatment helps in complete reversal of the condition in a holistic way.

Types of Dyslipidemia

Based on amount of lipids:

  1. Hyperlipidemia: It is a condition in which the lipid levels in the blood are high.
  2. Hypolipidemia: It is a condition in which the lipid levels in the blood are abnormally low.

Bases on causes of dyslipidemia:

Primary dyslipidemia: These are abnormal lipid levels that are caused due to genetics or gene mutation. The specific types of primary dyslipidemia can be noted as:

  1. Familial combined hyperlipidemia: This is the most prevalent hereditary cause of elevated LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. If you have familial mixed hyperlipidemia, you may develop these issues in your teens or early twenties. You're also more likely to develop early coronary artery disease, which can result in a heart attack.
  2. Familial hypercholesterolemia and polygenic hypercholesterolemia: Both of these are characterized by elevated total cholesterol levels.
  3. Total cholesterol is calculated by combining your LDL and HDL values, as well as half of your triglyceride level. The ideal total cholesterol level is less than 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).
  4. Familial hyperapobetalipoproteinemia: This disease indicates that you have high amounts of apolipoprotein B, a protein found in LDL cholesterol.

Secondary dyslipidemia: These are abnormal lipid levels that are acquired due to lifestyle habits and certain medical conditions. The causes can be noted as- high/low fat & high sugar diet, liver disease, excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, intake of certain medications like oral contraceptives, antidepressants, hypothyroidism, diabetes, untreated cancer, etc.
