How Does Our Left Ventricular Dysfunction Treatment Benefit You?

Left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) is the condition in which there is narrowing of the blood vessels carrying oxygenated blood to the body and dilation of the left ventricle of the heart. Symptoms of LVD includes- fatigue, pain, depression, anxiety, reduced stamina, palpitations, loss of appetite, etc. The causes that lead to LVD are- cardiac defects like valvular malformations, diseases that block the passage of blood flow in the body, etc. These causes compel the left ventricle to work harder and pump blood faster to compensate for the lack of oxygen-rich blood in the body tissues and organs. This causes thickening of heart muscles, and tends to stretch the walls to accommodate more blood, leading to LVD.
According to ayurveda, LVD is categorized under Hridaya roga. It is caused due to imbalance in tridoshas with predominance of Vata and Kapha dosha. As heart is the root of rasa vaha srotas and it is the organ responsible for circulation, vitiation of rasavaha srotas and rasa dhatu leads to LVD. The causes of this can be- food which are guru (not easily digestible), atisheeta (cold), atisnigdha (oily) and psychological factors like stress, etc. These causes lead to vitiation of Kapha dosha, which is associated with weakening of digestive fire and thus, accumulation of ama in the body. This accumulation of ama leads to narrowing of the sortas (as kapha is seated in the chest, blockages are most likely), causing LVD.
Thus, the treatment of LVD in ayurveda focuses on balancing the vitiated doshas, enhancing digestive fire, controlling water retention and enhancing vascular elasticity. This is done by panchakarma procedures that eliminate toxins from the body and balance the vitiated doshas. The treatment is also accompanied with intake of certain herbs like arjuna, gokshura, gulab, punarnava, tamboola, etc. Along with this, diet and exercise regimen are suggested to pacify the effects of vitiated doshas and avoid further blockages. This line of treatment helps in reversal of conditions in a holistic way.

Causes of LVD

  • Hypertension: This causes afterload and increases cardiac work, which leads to hypertrophy of the left ventricle.
  • Coronary arterial disease: This causes direct ischemic damage to the myocardium that lead to scar formation and decreases cardiac output.
  • Arrhythmias: This causes remodeling and decrease of cardiac output and impairs ventricular output.
  • Cardiomyopathies: This contains various mechanisms that cause cardiac dysfunction.
