Bedwetting is a condition in which there is involuntary urination while asleep after the age of five. It is also known as nighttime incontinence or nocturnal enuresis. The causes for this condition are- a small bladder, hormone imbalance, inability to recognize full bladder, urinary tract infection. Sleep apnea, diabetes, chronic constipation, structural problem of urinary tract or nervous system, etc. This condition may hamper a child’s self-esteem, loss or opportunities for social activities like camps, rashes on the child's bottom and genital area, etc.
“ ‘Shayyamutrata’ is the term for bedwetting in ayurvedic text. This disorder is due to imbalance in Vata dosha and is linked to bladder incontinence. Urination is the function of Apana Vata and is controlled by Prana and Vyana. The children with bedwetting conditions have imbalance with this Apana vata and results in loss of control over micturition. It can also be caused due to enclosure of Apana Vata by Kapha and results in excess production of urine.
Thus, the treatment of this condition in ayurveda focuses on balancing the vitiated doshas. This is done by performing some bladder exercises, intake or certain natural herbs and spices, and eliminating stress by practicing yoga, meditation and relaxation techniques. This line of treatment helps in reversal of the condition in a natural way.

“The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment giving importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease.”
“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”
