Obesity in simple terms means having too much fat in the body. Obesity is different from being overweight, as weight can be gained by intake of water or muscle weights, etc. But, obesity happens overtime when you have an over intake of calories and balance between calories intake and outsourcing of calories is disturbed. The factors affecting obesity are genetic makeup, overeating, eating high-fat foods and not being physically active.
“Ati Sthaulya” is the term for obesity in Ayurveda. It is described by over accumulation of Medha dhatu (fat/ adipose tissue) and Mamsa dhatu (flesh/ muscle tissue), which leads to flabbiness of hips, abdomen and breast. Santarpanottha Vikaras i.e. disease caused due to over consumption of calories, is root cause of obesity.
Obesity is primarily caused due to imbalance in Kapha dosha, and people having Kapha dosha dominant, are more likely to gain weight. The manifestation of obesity starts from one's food and lifestyle habits that affects the functions of Agni. Further, this disrupted Agni causes an increase in toxin levels in the body which form more fatty tissues. This also disturbs formation of other tissues in the body, and improper tissue layers cause reduction in Kapha functionality and increase in fats in the body.
To treat obesity, it is important to balance the vitiated doshas and increase in physical activities. The line of treatment followed at Elite Ayurveda is called Laghana that improves the efficacy of sensory organs, body lightness, correction in appetite and motions. Shodhana chikitsa is done to reduce body fat, followed by intake of medications to balance vitiated doshas. Along with this, customized diet and exercise plan is provided to balance lifestyle and external therapies like udwarthanam, kizhu, dhara, etc. are also done.
Herbal Lekhana medicines, which gently scrape the insides of the gastro-enteric tracts and remove ama and extra lipids, are recommended at this point. As a result, the metabolism is re-energized, and fat production is minimized. Yoga and free-hand activities are also suggested to complement the herb's activity.
The intermediate stage of obesity is treated with particular herbs for the purpose of Lekhana. In addition to the foregoing treatment options, the person should also consider panchakarma therapy for body purification, which aids in general metabolic improvement.
When a person's weight is more than 15 kgs above the acceptable weight, a new therapeutic method is used, which involves Panchakarma treatments like udvartanam (powder massage) and basti (medicated enemas). A calorie-balanced diet is also recommended, as well as lifestyle changes.
“The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment giving importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease.”
“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”
