Gastritis is a condition in which the stomach lining is inflamed, irritated or turns erosive. This may be sudden or may be a gradual change from healthy to inflamed one. The causes of gastritis can be excessive intake of alcohol, frequent vomiting, stress, intake of certain medications like aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs. Besides these, gastritis is also the result from attack of bacteria like H. pylori, reflux of bile juice and certain infections caused by bacteria and viruses. A person having gastritis shows the following symptoms- abdominal pain, hiccups, loss of appetite, vomiting, bloating, black stools, nausea, indigestion, etc.
‘Amlapitta’ is the term for gastritis in ayurveda. In this condition the main dosha that is vitiated is Pitta dosha, and the person starts getting a sour erection, burning in the chest, and also indigestion. The pitta dosha gets aggravated which leads to irritable symptoms of gastritis, and is caused due to intake of fermented food, spices, fried food, tobacco, etc.
The treatment for gastritis in ayurveda focuses on elimination of the root cause of the condition, which in this case is aggravation of Pitta dosha. Ayurvedic therapies like abhyanga, vamana, virechana, etc. are used in the gastritis condition. Further, some herbal formulations are also provided that help in pacifying the effects of Pitta dosha. These herbs include- bilwa, amalaki, shatavari, yashtimadhu, bhringraj, etc. This line of treatment helps in complete reversal of gastritis via a holistic approach.
According to ayurveda, the duodenum which is the part of the intestine, is the place where all the three doshas- Vata, Pitta and Kapha, are found. It also acts as the seat for Agni. When there is imbalance in doshas, the effect is exerted on Agni, which then leads to Amlapitta (gastritis).
The treatment involves following steps:
“The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment giving importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease.”
“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”
