How Does Our Gastritis Treatment Benefit You?

Gastritis is a condition in which the stomach lining is inflamed, irritated or turns erosive. This may be sudden or may be a gradual change from healthy to inflamed one. The causes of gastritis can be excessive intake of alcohol, frequent vomiting, stress, intake of certain medications like aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs. Besides these, gastritis is also the result from attack of bacteria like H. pylori, reflux of bile juice and certain infections caused by bacteria and viruses. A person having gastritis shows the following symptoms- abdominal pain, hiccups, loss of appetite, vomiting, bloating, black stools, nausea, indigestion, etc.
‘Amlapitta’ is the term for gastritis in ayurveda. In this condition the main dosha that is vitiated is Pitta dosha, and the person starts getting a sour erection, burning in the chest, and also indigestion. The pitta dosha gets aggravated which leads to irritable symptoms of gastritis, and is caused due to intake of fermented food, spices, fried food, tobacco, etc.
The treatment for gastritis in ayurveda focuses on elimination of the root cause of the condition, which in this case is aggravation of Pitta dosha. Ayurvedic therapies like abhyanga, vamana, virechana, etc. are used in the gastritis condition. Further, some herbal formulations are also provided that help in pacifying the effects of Pitta dosha. These herbs include- bilwa, amalaki, shatavari, yashtimadhu, bhringraj, etc. This line of treatment helps in complete reversal of gastritis via a holistic approach.

Types of gastritis

  1. Erosive gastritis: It is also known as reactive gastritis in which the stomach lining is inflamed and also gets erosive. The causes for erosive gastritis include- excessive intake of alcohol, smoking, NSAIDs, corticosteroids, viral or bacterial infections. In some cases it may also be manifested due to stress and some injuries.
  2. Non-erosive gastritis: In this condition, the lining of the stomach is inflamed and is not erosive.

Causes

  1. Intake of alcohol: When there is excessive intake of alcohol, the stomach lining slowly degrades and gets inflamed.
  2. Autoimmune disease: In this case, the body’s faulty immune system attacks the stomach linings, leading to gastritis.
  3. Bacterial infections: Bacteria like H. pylori cause stomach ulcers that break down stomach lining and cause inflammation.
  4. Bile reflux: The liver makes bile juice that helps in digestion of fatty foods. The movement of bile is from stomach to intestine, and when this movement is reversed, the condition is known as bile reflux that deteriorates the lining of the stomach.
  5. Physical stress: Injuries to the brain, stress, trauma, etc. are all responsible for manifestation of gastritis.

Symptoms

  1. Black stools
  2. Bloating
  3. Nausea
  4. Vomiting
  5. Stomach ulcers
  6. Upper abdominal discomfort
  7. Blood in vomit
  8. Loss of weight

Symptoms

According to ayurveda, the duodenum which is the part of the intestine, is the place where all the three doshas- Vata, Pitta and Kapha, are found. It also acts as the seat for Agni. When there is imbalance in doshas, the effect is exerted on Agni, which then leads to Amlapitta (gastritis).

The treatment involves following steps:

  1. Abhyanga: It involves application of herbs to the body to stimulate the immune system and prevents gastritis caused due to infections.
  2. Vamana: It is a panchakarma procedure in which a person is administered herbs that induce vomiting. It aids in treating indigestion, poisoning and inflammation of the stomach.
  3. Virechana: it involves intake of herbs that induce purgation and evacuate the bowel. This adds on to the cleansing of the body and clearing up ama. This is primarily used in elimination of aggravated Pitta dosha.
  4. Along with above procedures, some herbs are recommended that boost the digestive system, enhance the nourishment of tissues in the body, settle Agni and reverse the condition of gastritis.
