How Does Our Vaginitis Treatment Benefit You?

Vaginitis refers to various disorders that lead to vaginal infections or vaginal inflammations. These disorders are caused due to infections by organisms like bacteria, yeast or viruses. Further, usage of creams, sprays or clothing can also affect vagina and cause vaginitis. It can also be caused due to infection passed during sexual intercourse, vaginal dryness and lack of estrogen. The symptoms of vaginitis include- white vaginal discharge, itchy feeling in vulva, redness, burning sensation, abnormal smelling of vaginal discharge, greenish-yellow discharge, bleeding, discomfort in lower abdomen, etc.
‘Kaphaja Yoni Vyapath’ is the term for vaginitis in ayurveda. Due to excessive use of Abhishyandi substances i.e. oily substances, they reach the reproductive system and cause Pichhila, sheets, pandu varna, yoni Srava, kandu and alpa vedana in yoni. Other factors that change normal balance of the vagina are excess use of antibiotics, douching, spermicides, sexual intercourse, breast feeding, and abnormal changes in hormones.
The main reason for problems with yoni is Vata dosha imbalance, especially because of Vata sthana of the reproductive system. Thus, the treatment of vaginitis focuses on pacifying the effects of Vata dosha. This is done by ayurvedic therapies like, Snehana (unction), svedana (fomentation), mrdu shodhana (purification), etc. The treatment is also accompanied by intake of medications like ashokarishta, lodhrasava, aragwadharishtam, etc. This line of treatment helps in reversing the symptoms of vaginitis in a natural way.

Types of Vaginitis:

  • Candida or yeast infections: Candida is the type of yeast that lives in vagina as well as in the mouth and digestive tract. During vaginitis, there is abnormal increase in candida and leads to symptoms like thick white vaginal discharge, itchiness in the vulva, redness, small cuts on vulva and burning sensation.
  • Bacterial vaginosis: This is caused due to a combination of several bacteria that live in vagina. These bacteria tend to grow abnormally due to vaginal pH imbalances. It is common in women who smoke, have new or multiple sexual partners, and douching. The symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include- abnormal smelling of vaginal discharge that is thin and milky.
  • Trichomoniasis: This condition is caused due to a small unicellular organism called protozoa. It is transmitted through sexual intercourse and also can be spread due to vulva-to-vulva contact. The symptoms of Trichomoniasis include- frothy, greenish-yellow discharge with foul smell; itching and soreness in vagina; discomfort in lower abdomen and vaginal pain.
  • Chlamydia: It is the type of STI which is usually observed in young adults who have multiple sexual partners. A similar type of STI is gonorrhea that causes the symptoms of vaginitis. The symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea include- light bleeding and pain in lower abdomen and pelvis.
  • Viral vaginitis: There are various types of viral vaginitis like
  1. Herpes simplex virus (HSV): Sexual contact spreads these illnesses, which can result in painful blisters. Stress and mental anguish are frequently linked to herpes outbreaks. Oral intercourse can potentially give you herpes, which affects your mouth and throat.
  2. Human papillomavirus (HPV): Condyloma, often known as genital warts, is caused by HPV, which can be spread during vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse. This virus can lead to painful warts in your vaginal, rectum, vulva, or groin.
  • Non-infectious vaginitis: You can have a vaginal discomfort due to an allergic response without getting an infection. An allergic response or irritation from vaginal sprays, douches, or spermicidal treatments is the most typical reason. The symptoms of this may include- itching, burning sensation and irritation in vulva and vagina; mucus like thick vaginal discharge.
  • Atrophic vaginitis: Atrophic vaginitis, also known as genitourinary syndrome of menopause and vulvovaginal atrophy, is a kind of non-infectious vaginitis caused by a drop in hormone levels. Your vagina gets dry or atrophic if you have it. The symptoms of this may include- pain while sexual intercourse, vaginal itching and burning and urinary urgency.
