The urinary tract infection is an infection that affects any part of the urinary tract i.e. in kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. This is most commonly observed in women than in men. Some women can have repeated infections in a year. The symptoms of UTI include- burning feeling while peeing, frequent urges to pee; cloudy, dark and bloody or foul smelled pee; fatigue; feeling shaky; fever or chills, and pain in back and lower abdomen. The cause for UTI is the bacteria E-coli that during infection comes out from anus to urethra. This causes pain and other irritating symptoms that are onset for this condition.
‘Mutrakricchra’ is the term associated with UTI in ayurvedic texts. According to ayurveda, there are eight types of UTI’s that are caused due to vitiation of different doshas and dhatus. These types can be noted as- Vataja, Pittaja, Kaphaja, Sannipataja, Raktaja, Shukraja, Ashmari, and Sharkaraja. The vitiation of doshas and Agni leads to production of Ama which then combines with the vitiated doshas and produces symptoms of UTI.
Thus, the ayurvedic treatment for UTI focuses on elimination of Ama and balancing the vitiated doshas and dhatus. This is done by various ayurvedic procedures like Basti (enema), Swedana (sudation), and Lepa. Further, the treatment is also associated with intake of ayurvedic herbs like gokshura, punarnava, shilajatu, amalaki, kantakari, etc. that help in ease of pain and eliminate toxins. This line of treatment helps in reversing the symptoms of UTI in a holistic way.

“The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment giving importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease.”
“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”
"Heal your body naturally with 5000-year-old knowledge of Ayurveda and Modern Science. From its authenticity, structured approach and personalisation play a very important role in complementing the effect of medicines as well as sustaining the benefit of treatment after the medicines have ended."
Herbal remedies are administered to treat the relevant doshas and minimize infection inside the urinary system in situations when UTI has developed for the first time. Medicines to balance Pitta are administered since this is a Pitta-imbalance condition. Panchakarma can also be used to remove ama from the body. Counseling is given to patients to help them maintain cleanliness and avoid illness.
When UTI has progressed to the point that it is recurring, therapy focuses on treating the underlying causes. Purification and balancing dominant doshas are achieved with Panchakarma, and revitalizing herbs are administered to improve the urinary tract.
