How Does Our Cervical Spondylosis Treatment Benefit You?

Cervical spondylosis is also known as neck arthritis, which refers to wear and tear of cartilage, disks, ligaments and bones in the neck. The main symptoms include pain and stiffness in the neck. The neck pain is more common at an older age as the disks and joints in the neck usually tend to degenerate. The disks when grow older, they lose their heights and begin to bulge. This is due to reduction in water content, which then begins to dry out and weaken. Thus, the cushioning qualities of disks decreases, which initiates pain and stiffness.
According to ayurveda, cervical spondylosis is referred to as ‘sandhigata Vata’. The reason for its manifestation is the aggravation of Vata dosha. This results due to unhealthy lifestyle and intake of Vata aggravating foods. Further, when the body tries to compensate for this weakness in bones by strengthening the spine with bone growth, it causes the formation of bone spurs that cause pain.
Thus, the treatment for cervical spondylosis in ayurveda is to balance the Vata dosha. This is done by use of herbal formulations that calm the Vata dosha. The patients are also advised to intake Vata enhancing foods to stop further deterioration. Further, when the digestive system starts causing metabolic wastes (Ama), it penetrates into joints and causes inflammation and compounds joint problems. Thus, special focus is also diverted in balancing the digestive system. This is done by application of oils like mahanarayana thailam and hot fomentation, steam therapy, navarakizhi or greeva basti treatments. This line of treatment helps in complete reversal of cervical spondylosis.

Types of cervical spondylosis:

  1. Cervical Radiculopathy (Type I syndrome): It is commonly called ‘pinched nerve’, which occurs when the neck is compressed and branches away from the spinal cord. This may cause severe pain in the neck and also in the shoulders. It also weakens the muscles and causes numbness.
  2. Cervical Myelopathy (Type II syndrome): It refers to the compression of the cervical spinal cord and is predominantly caused due to pressure on the anterior spinal cord with ischemia. It is characterized by a long period of stable disability, which is followed by deterioration of the bones in the spine.
  3.  Axial Joint Pain (Type III syndrome): Axial pain is discomfort that originates in the cervical spine and is accompanied by motor or sensory impairment in the hands or lower extremities. Preventing the onset of axial neck discomfort and reducing its symptoms can be accomplished by improving posture, ergonomics, and muscular strength.
