Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is also known as Willis- Ekbom disease (WED) which is a neurological disorder. RLS causes unacceptable sensations in legs like tingling, crawling or pulling sensation, also with a powerful urge to move them. These urges are more intense when a person is relaxed completely or is trying to sleep. The main problem with people having RLS is, it interferes with their sleep cycles that causes daytime sleepiness and fatigue. This loss of sleep can further lead to depression, nervousness and stress.
As RLS is a neurological disorder, it is caused due to imbalance in Vata dosha- Vata Vyadhi. According to Ayurveda, all the motions and senses are governed by Vata dosha. The properties of Vata dosha consists of dryness, roughness, intense, coldness, mobility, etc. and when it gets accumulated, it causes excessive dryness of the protective layers of the nerves, which disturbs the nerve conduction. When this damage of nerves is slow, RLS is manifested when the targeted nerves are legs.
The treatment for RLS involves balancing to Vata dosha and targeting the nerves which are affected by RLS. Further treatments and medicines are employed for Twak Gata Vata, Gridhrasi chikitsa and Mamsagata Vata. The procedure also involves the panchakarma procedures to eliminate the toxins and accumulated doshas in the body. This line of treatment allows to reverse the condition effectively.

“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”
