Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which a person is either unable to sleep, feels hard to sleep, or wakes up too early, or is unable to get back to sleep after waking up. This makes a person feel tired even after waking up, saps away the energy level and mood, and affects health, work performance and quality of life. The symptoms of this condition include- difficulty in falling asleep at night, waking up during night, waking up too early, daytime tiredness, difficulty in concentrating, increased errors, etc. The causes for this condition can be stress, traveling, poor sleep habits, mental health disorders, too much intake of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, etc.
‘Anidra’ is the term for insomnia in ayurvedic terms. It is caused due to vitiation in Kapha and Vata dosha i.e. low levels of Kapha dosha and high levels of Vata dosha. This also elevates the levels of Pitta dosha in the body and leads to over-activity of the body even at night. The people who experience frequent waking at night with palpitations, body aches and emotional imbalances which include fear, anger and sadness- is often regarded as pitta- type insomnia.
Thus, in order to treat the insomnia condition, it is important to treat it from the root cause, which in this case is vitiation of doshas. This treatment includes vasti, shirodhara, shiroabhyanga, padabhyanga, abhyanga, and goga practices. The treatment is also accompanied by maintaining a proper diet and exercise regimen that helps in pacifying the effects of vitiated doshas. It also involves intake of certain herbal formulations which include brahmi, vacha, ashwagandha, jatamansi, etc. that helps in boosting metabolism and balancing of vitiated doshas. This line of treatment helps in complete reversal of the condition in a holistic way.

“The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment giving importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease.”
“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”

This sort of insomnia is brought on by a physical problem. The treatment works by treating the underlying cause of sleep disruption. Herbo-mineral drugs are used to balance the doshas of Vata and Pitta, as well as to strengthen the neurological system. Internal and exterior oiling is advised with abhyanga. Panchakarma therapy is also quite beneficial.
Insomnia-like symptoms can also be caused by psychological factors like stress and worry. Jiva doctor creates a treatment plan that focuses on balancing rajas in the mind, as well as relaxing and revitalizing it. Massage treatments for the head and feet should be used with caution. Shirodhara and shiro basti are two panchakarma treatments that are recommended. During consultations, special counseling sessions are provided to address specific issues.
