Bronchitis is a condition in which there is inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. People who suffer from bronchitis have thick coughs which can be discolored. This condition can either be chronic or acute that develops from cold or other respiratory infections. The symptoms of bronchitis are cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, excess production of mucus, etc. This condition can be caused due to smoking, poor immune system, exposure to toxic gasses and gastric reflux.
‘Shwasa Pranali Shoth’ is the term for bronchitis in ayurvedic text. It is caused due to vitiation of Vata and Kapha dosha along with Pranavaha srotas. This vitiation tends to accumulate coughs with mucus in the lungs. Further, due to weak digestive fire- Agni, the toxins get accumulated in the pranavaha srotas that worsens the condition. Also, when Agni is weak, the resistance of the body for foreign substances is low, thus bronchitis can be caused due to some allergic reaction in the body.
Hence, the treatment of bronchitis in ayurveda mainly focuses on balancing the vitiated doshas and eliminating toxins from the body. This is done by rejuvenation therapy and enema, to retard toxins from the body and opening circulation to loosen impurities embedded in the tissues. Massage with specific herbal oils is also done to provide deep soothing and balancing effects of entire physiology. Herbs like ginger, basil, Malabar nut, black pepper, etc. are also given to restore the balance of the body. The entire treatment is accompanied with a balanced diet and exercise regimen that help in pacifying the effects of vitiated doshas and avoid further accumulation of toxins. This line of treatment helps in complete reversal of the condition in a natural way.

“The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment giving importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease.”
“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”
