How Does Our Chronic Cough Treatment Benefit You?

Chronic cough is a condition that lasts for eight weeks or more and can be more than just an annoyance. The cough may interrupt you while sleeping and leave you feeling exhausted. In severe cases, it may cause vomiting, lightheadedness, and even rib fractures. The symptoms can be noted as runny nose, postnasal drip, sore throat, hoarseness, wheeziness, heartburn, etc. The chronic cough is caused due to post-nasal drip, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), infections, drugs for blood pressure, etc.
‘Vata-Kaphaja Pratishaya’ is the term for chronic cough in ayurveda. According to ayurveda, chronic cough is caused due to virudha aahara (incorrect food), ama (toxins) and asatmya (change in environment); that may lead to allergic reactions like running nose and cough. This is when the ama gets accumulated in the body as a result of impaired metabolism and digestion. Cough is the result of vitiation of doshas- Kapha and Vata.
Thus, the treatment of chronic cough in ayurveda focuses on balancing the vitiated doshas and eliminating toxins from the body. This is done by Vamana panchakarma, followed by virechana therapy. In some people, nasya treatment is preferred because it helps to clear congestion. This treatment is done by pouring herbal oils like shadbindu or anu taila in nostrils. The medications are also administered to strengthen the immune system and respiratory tract that help in relieving from chronic cough. The ayurvedic formulations for chronic cough include ginger, turmeric, saunth, black pepper, cloves, black raisins, etc. This line of treatment helps in complete reversal of the condition in a holistic way.

Causes of chronic cough

  • Asthma: It is the second most common cause of persistent cough. When you have asthma, you will experience shortness of breath and wheezing. These respiratory problems might lead to a persistent cough. There is also a kind of asthma known as cough-variant asthma, in which a persistent cough is the only symptom.
  • Bronchiectasis: This ailment causes coughing due to mucus buildup and thickening of lung tissue.
  • Bronchitis: It is a well-known cause of coughing owing to enlargement in the bronchial tubes and an increase in mucus production. There are two kinds of migraines: chronic and acute.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): COPD refers to a collection of respiratory problems that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
  • Upper respiratory diseases such as flu, pneumonia, and colds are typically caused by viruses. Coughing is one of the symptoms that tends to linger after the others have passed. Viruses target the nose, throat, and sinuses.
  • Other reasons for chronic cough include- sinusitis, allergies, cancer, intake of medications that are used to treat high blood pressure and kidney damage, unhealthy eating habits, change in environment, etc.

Ayurveda for chronic cough

Ayurveda defines chronic cough as Kasa. There are five types of kasa according to ayurveda:

  1. Vataja kasa: This is caused due to accumulation of Vata dosha. The symptoms include- dry cough, problem in getting rid of phlegm, abdominal pain, hoarseness of voice, resonance of cough, etc.
  2. Pittaja kasa: This is caused due to accumulation of Pitta dosha. The symptoms include- elimination of yellow mucus, bitter taste in mouth, problem in speaking, chest burning, urge for drinking water frequently, loss of appetite, etc.
  3. Kaphaja kasa: This is caused due to aggravation of kapha dosha. The symptoms include- excess of mucus, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, feeling of fullness in chest, salty taste of mucus, etc.
  4. Kshataja kasa: This is caused due to damage of lung tissues, caused due to excessive stress on lungs. The symptoms include dry cough followed by blood tinged sputum, chest pain, sore throat, pigeon-like humming sound from chest, etc.
  5. Kshayaja kasa: This is caused due to decay in the body. The symptoms include- phlegm with blood and pus, weakness while coughing, changing body temperature, psychological disturbances, feeling feverish, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.
