Urticaria, also known as hives, weals, welts, or nettle rash, is a rash that occurs on the skin and is inflamed and irritating. It might occur on a small portion of the body or cover a large area. The rash is often very irritating and can range in size from a few millimeters to a hand's length.
“Sheetapitta” is the Ayurvedic term for Urticaria. Sheetapitta is derived from two words – ‘Seetha’ which means ‘cold’ and ‘pitta’ which means ‘hot’. Thus, it is caused due to over control of ‘cold’ over ‘hot’. When people come in contact with cold air, there is aggravation of Kapha (water) and Vata (air)in the body. Along with them, Pitta Dosha (fire) also gets aggravated and spreads into Rakta Dhatu (blood tissues). This spread of Pitta dosha in Rakta Dhatu vitiates blood, which then relocates in the skin and causes urticaria (Sheetapitta).
The treatment of urticaria/hives follows multiple detoxification of the body to remove ama, abhyanga, sevadana, vamana, virechana, relaxation of mind and consumption of herbs and diet that helps to cure urticaria. This line of treatment has proven to be effective in reversing this condition within a period of weeks.
At Elite Ayurveda, we try to eliminate the disease from its root cause by using the wisdom of traditional medicine. The treatment for Urticaria (hives) follows the steps mentioned below:
Insect bites, drugs, infections, some internal diseases, or eating foods like almonds, chocolates, seafood, tomatoes, eggs, berries, or milk can all trigger Acute Urticaria symptoms, which persist shorter than six weeks. Acute Urticaria can be caused by medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or some pain relievers. They commonly affect the cheeks, toes, fingers, neck, and even the genitals of men.
Urticaria will persist for longer than six weeks if it is chronic. Chronic Urticaria has a difficult, if not impossible, to diagnose cause. Chronic Urticaria causes can, however, be connected to the immune system or disorders like thyroid, hepatitis, or even cancer in some situations. Chronic hives may be painful and unsightly, and they can also interfere with a person's sleep and day-to-day activities.
The hives develop due to physical reasons like mosquito bite, cold, increase in body temperature, sun exposure, or due to rubbing on skin frequently.
“The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment giving importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease.”
“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”
