Why EliteAyurveda

How are we able to Treat Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the spine that often results in vertebral fusion.

Spondylitis literally refers to spine inflammation. Ankylosing is the process of bone fusion. In this instance, the vertebrae are adjacent, resulting in an "ankylosed" appearance on X-ray imaging.
However, it is now common practice to refer to diseases affecting the spine by the afflicted vertebrae's name. Thus, spondylitis is inflammation of the spine, and ankylosing spondylitis is inflammation of a specific portion of the spine. Five fused vertebrae comprise "the sacrum"

According to Ayurveda, Ankylosing spondylitis falls under the category of Ama Vata and is primarily caused due to the imbalance in the Vata and Kapha dosha. This further affects the pitta dosha which encourages the condition.
The treatment of Ankylosing spondylitis in Ayurveda comprises of diet modifications, lifestyle changes, stress management, intake of herbal medications and Ayurvedic therapies, yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation; that help body to get back normal and thereby syncing all the functions in the body. Based on the symptoms a person is having, the above therapies are also accompanied with dhanyamla dhara, podikkizhi, ilakkizhi and oil massage with a steam bath. All these therapies balance the vitiated doshas and reversing the symptoms of Ankylosing spondylitis.

Understand how we can help you with Ankylosing Spondylitis ..

What causes Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Ankylosing spondylitis begins with inflammation caused by the activation of the immune system prior to a bacterial infection or a combination of microbial infections.
Even after the initial bacterial infection subsides, the immune system is unable to deactivate. In the absence of an active infection, the chronic inflammation that persists due to an activated immune system begins to attack the body's tissues. This symptom is characteristic of autoimmune diseases.
As a result of inflammation, the body begins to produce additional calcium around the bones of the spine in order to promote healing. This extra bone develops and causes back and neck pain and stiffness. As the disease progresses, the vertebrae fuse together due to an excess of calcium, and in severe cases, the spine curves.

Why does Ankylosing Spondylitis occur?

There is no known cause for ankylosing spondylitis. The genetic factor appears to play a role. Those with the HLA-B27 gene have the highest risk of developing it. However, not all individuals with this gene develop the disease.
The HLA-B27 locus is detectable in the blood of the majority of ankylosing spondylitis patients. The vast majority of disease sufferers are born with this gene.
However, some additional environmental factors are also necessary for gene expression. Inheritance increases the likelihood of developing this condition. If you have parents or relatives with ankylosing spondylitis, your risk of developing this condition increases by 11%. The ARTS1 and IL23R alleles are also associated with this condition. These genes have an effect on the immune system of the body.

Ankylosing Spondylitis Subtypes

Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of the arthritis spondylitis. Other instances of spondylitis arthritis include:
Non-radiographic Spondyloarthritis - characterized by neck stiffness and discomfort as its primary symptoms. An x-ray does not reveal any physical alterations. Nonetheless, some individuals diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis subsequently develop this condition.
Psoriatic spondyloarthritis – This is a type of arthritis that occurs in conjunction with psoriasis.
Enteropathic arthritis - spondyloarthritis associated with inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.
Reactive arthritis - Arthritis resulting from an infection
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis - a form of arthritis that affects infants and adolescents. It forms where tendons and ligaments attach to the bone.

Ankylosing Spondylitis in Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurvedic philosophy is multifaceted. Ayurveda examines a condition or disease from multiple angles. This multidimensional approach is effective for treating complex conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis.

Dosha aggravation in AS -

Doshas are the first consideration in Ayurvedic treatment for Ankylosing Spondylitis. According to the symptoms of AS, Kapha and Vata are the primary involved doshas.

Kapha causes - Stiffness, limited mobility, Congestion of the channels, collection of toxins

Vata causes - Degradation of tissues, Muscular spasm and movement difficulties.

The management of AS is therefore determined by these two doshas. Because there are few similarities between these two. Therefore, this disease makes life difficult for everyone.

Vata is arid, while Kapha is viscous. When we want to exert control over one of these, the opposite occurs.

It is difficult for western medicine to determine the cause of a disease's "incurable" status. The treatment of AS therefore concentrates on the two Doshas.

Immune system self-destruction

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) can also be classified as a autoimmune disorder. The immune system incorrectly assaults healthy tissue, in this case the tissues that line your spine (sacroiliac joints and intervertebral discs).

As a result, the immune system strives to kill healthy tissue (which it misidentifies as a bacterial intruder), resulting in inflammation. "Traditional AS therapies only depress the immune system. This decreases inflammation but hinders normal immune function. According to research, one cause of AS is improper signalling by particular immune system cells known as regulatory T cells"

Immunosuppressive treatments will have less of an impact on this defective signalling. That is why scientists are looking into innovative strategies to induce the development of additional Tregs-cells. These can assist to slow the progression of AS without interfering with natural immunity. Current research initiatives are looking into methods to get the desired results. This comprises cell genetic manipulation and the use of monoclonal antibodies.
Ayurvedic treatment for ankylosing spondylitis is based on this concept.

Ankylosing Spondylitis Ayurvedic Treatment

Ayurvedic treatment for AS is based on three factors.

By eliminating toxins, we can slow the progression of the disease.
Reducing joint inflammation.
Putting a stop to joint fusion.

These three aspects of hearing are straightforward. However, all of these stages require a significant amount of effort.
The following are the specifics of these procedures:

Toxin elimination

Genes require a suitable environment in order to manifest themselves. Toxins contribute to the environment. These poisons are not actually toxic but something that disrupts the usual biological process. As a result, there are issues in the body.

Panchakarma is a tool that aids in the removal of harmful toxins. We do two types of procedures in this condition, depending on the patient's condition: Virechana and Basti. These two help restore the body's regular processes while also removing toxins.

In addition, several external therapies are performed to remove local toxins from the body. As a result, we must work both externally and internally.

The process takes between 14 and 21 days, depending on the circumstances & varies case to case.

Joint Inflammation Reduction

Blood has two functions. - Providing new nourishment & Eliminating toxins from the area.

With our treatment, we only need to get the blood to the correct place. When this blood flows appropriately, it aids in both functions. We accomplish this through the use of our Ayurveda medications.

Putting a stop to joint fusion

Once we have completed the preceding two steps. Stopping the fusion of the joints becomes simple. Because in the case of AS, this is the condition that one fears.

Ankylosing spondylitis puts all joints at risk. This disorder can affect any joint, not only the spine. As a result, we must appropriately save the body.

To compensate for this, aiding the dryness of the ligaments is also important.

The early signs of ankylosing spondylitis include stiffness in lower back and hips, which is also accompanied by pain. The most commonly affected areas are- joint between base of spine and the pelvis; vertebrae in lower back; cartilage between the breastbone and ribs; hips and shoulders, etc.

Ankylosing Spondylitis patients frequently express a persistent, dull ache that seems like it's originating from deep inside their lower back or buttocks, as well as morning stiffness. It is common for symptoms to increase, improve, or disappear at regular periods.

Headaches, loss over bladder control, muscle spasms, pain and soreness in the part of origin like neck, shoulder, etc., stiffness, tenderness, tingling in the affected area and weakness in arms or legs; are the warning signs of ankylosing spondylitis.
