Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) occur when the veins and arteries do not establish the correct connections.
AVMs can develop in any part of the body. When they occur in the brain and spinal cord, they are referred to as neurological AVMs. These are more likely to cause symptoms in various body regions.
Spinal AVMs can cause problems with circulation because they impede blood flow within the body. Typically, your arteries transport oxygen-rich blood away from your heart and to all of your body's cells. Your veins transport this oxygen-depleted blood back to your lungs and heart. Capillaries, which modulate blood flow, are absent in spinal AVMs caused by malformations of the arteries and veins, preventing this natural cycle from occurring.
If a spinal AVM ruptures, it can have serious consequences. They can cause surrounding areas to haemorrhage. Additionally, they can cause symptoms by compressing or redirecting blood flow away from portions of the spinal cord.
According to Ayurveda, the Arteriovenous Malformations is the cause of vitiation of Vata dosha. The reason for vitiation of this dosha is unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle habits. This Vata dosha travels throughout the body and rests in the area of blocked channels.
In Ayurveda, the mode of treatment of Arteriovenous Malformations is to balance the vitiated dosha and eliminate the toxins accumulated in the channels. The treatment may include detoxification by various panchakarma procedures, abhyanga massage, herbal pottali massage, purgation and mild herbal enema along with classic ayurveda herbal medications. These procedures help in relieving pain and reversing the symptoms of Arteriovenous Malformations.

“The ayurvedic approach of disease looks for the root cause and not merely the symptoms. The basic principles of Ayurveda consider an individual human a specific identity and hence his treatment giving importance to the treatment of the patient rather than the treatment of the disease.”
“Since Ayurveda focuses on the root-cause of the disease, it effectively reduces the risk of severe health complications arising out of the untreated underlying cause. Patients who complete their Ayurveda treatment have a reduced risk of health complications later.”

Spinal AVMs are frequently asymptomatic. When they occur, they are typically minor and difficult to detect. In some individuals, however, the symptoms can be severe enough to impair their ability to function.
These are the most frequent signs of a spinal AVM -
Muscles that experience weakness or paralysis
Leg stiffness, resulting in difficulty walking
Abnormal gastrointestinal and bladder control
Ataxia refers to problems with balance and coordination.
Pain or peculiar bodily sensations, such as tingling or numbness, throughout the body.
According to Ayurveda, Spinal AVM is primarily caused by an imbalance of vata doshas, along with pitta and kapha doshas. Therefore, Ayurvedic treatment is founded on unblocking the blood channels and increasing blood flow to the affected area.
