One of the spinal ligaments responsible for holding these bones together is the ligamentum flavum. Some ligaments are on the exterior, while others are on the interior. On the inner side of vertebrae, the ligamentum flavum acts as a sheath. This ligament connects each upper vertebra to the following lower vertebra. It assures the correct movement of the vertebrae, albeit with some restriction.
Together with the spinal disc, this ligament functions primarily as a stress absorber. Movement and impact go hand in hand. Therefore, wherever there are movements, we require something that can absorb impact. Ligamentum flavum and the spinal disc perform this function.
These ligaments contain collagen. Each consists of elastic yellow tissue. There is a perpendicular arrangement of fibres. These fibres attach to the anterior surface of the lamina above. Ligaments have a limited blood supply. However, these are sturdy structures. Therefore, these ligaments of the spine combine flexibility and strength.
In Ayurveda, the mode of treatment of Ligamentum Flavum Hypertrophy is to balance the vitiated dosha and eliminate the toxins accumulated in the channels. The treatment may include detoxification by various panchakarma procedures, abhyanga massage, herbal pottali massage, purgation and mild herbal enema along with classic ayurveda herbal medications. These procedures help in relieving pain and reversing the symptoms of Ligamentum Flavum Hypertrophy.

As per Ayurveda muscles are "ligaments". "Mamsa dhatu" is a type of "Snayu," according to Ayurveda. These are the home of the Vayu Dosha, which is the main cause of trouble with the spinal discs. There are four different kinds of Snayu: Pratanvahi (branched), Vrutha (circle), Sushira (porus), and Pruthu (flat). Ligamentum flavum is a kind of Snayu that is flat.
When diseases affect the Snayu (ligaments) and Sandhi (joints), they always hurt. In the case of Marma (the important points), there is a group of Snayu Marma, and the back has these points. Marma can also cause sciatica (Grudhrasi).
The vertebrae stay together because of the spinal tendon. In addition to this, it also makes sure that the spine can move. So, every time the spine moves, this ligament is at risk. But not the ones that come naturally. Unnatural moves and bad posture can put stress on the ligamentum flavum and cause it to get thicker.
When the ligamentum flavum gets thicker or gets bigger, it looks like a scar. When any of the following are present: age, trauma, or stress. Some cells will settle in the collagen tissue and make a buildup there, which is basically the same thing as swelling of the ligamentum flavum.
Since this ligament is located within the spinal canal. Thus, it promptly impacts the canal. When there is a history of strain and injury due to poor posture. MRI makes it simple to detect this condition. Since this ligament is present in the canal & due to the constriction of the canal, the pain is akin to that of a herniated disc. Therefore, it is comparable to the condition of a slip disc.
The fact that thickening of the ligamentum flavum occurs with disc protrusion alone is unimportant. Whether or not a disc protrusion is present, hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum can occur. Thus, Ayurvedic treatment for hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum targets the underlying cause of the issue or the issue that it is causing.
Ayurveda does not recommend the use of painkillers to treat disc-related pain. Here, the primary goal of ayurvedic treatment is to restore balance to the aggravated doshas. Because, according to Ayurveda, these doshas cause spinal disc issues. When we balance the doshas, things begin to return to normal.
It is the ultimate therapeutic experience and is designed to revitalise the body. The treatment consists of Virechana, Basti, Kati basti, Pottali, Swedana, and Dhanyamla dhara, amongst others. These therapies aid in muscle relaxation by increasing blood circulation.
Therapeutic Yoga Positions
After Panchkarma therapy, we administer yoga therapy for total healing. Yoga treatment is highly effective and a wonderful addition to medication. These yoga asanas are an excellent method to eliminate slipped disc issues. We have yoga instructors who instruct patients in various asanas and other relaxation poses. The poses are performed entirely under our supervision for multiple days.
