The food that we consume is our primary source of energy for our bodies- glucose. After glucose reaches our blood, our cells can break down into usable energy with a hormone produced by the pancreas called insulin.

What it is?

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic condition caused by a lack of insulin hormone production (Type 1 diabetes) or inadequate insulin hormone production (Type 2 diabetes), which improves sugar metabolism. Patients develop high blood sugar as a result of this.

Blood glucose can lead to an illness called diabetes, which is becoming too high if this happens. Three major types of diabetes are diagnosed as type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes affects 90 percent of diabetics. Diabetic retinopathy affects the skin, diabetic nephropathy affects the kidneys, diabetic neuropathy affects the nerves, and diabetic cardiopathy affects the core. The patient can lose weight, experience numbness in his limbs, and experience cardiac arrest. Our bodies often do not contain or are incapable of using enough insulin properly.

Ayurvedic view on diabetes

The three doshas naturally present in our bodies are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Because of the wrong habitats, all three, in particular Kapha, are imbalanced, harming or causing fluidity/liquidity/or Jal ( water) as a major constituent, such as Meda, Maans, Majja, Vasa, Lasika or Jal (water).

All this damages the mutra or urine in Basti and causes the above symptoms called Prameha or diabetes.

Sushruta has taken diabetes further and has split it into two groups.

Sahaja has a very similar characteristic of Type I, as it has been identified as inherited, due to defects in parental genes. It is also listed as diabetes in juveniles. The people who have Sahaja usually are Vata with slender, dry skin, low appetite, and a highly active character.

Type-II diabetes is close to apathyanimittaja. It is generally acquired later in life due to poor diet and lifestyle. The patients typically have overweight conditions. Because of this and the holistic approach of Ayurveda, Ayurveda has been regarded as a viable way of fighting diabetes of type II.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, a build-up of tissue toxins that trigger imbalances in all three Doshas is the ultimate cause of Type II diabetes. This toxin accumulation is caused by poor diet, weak digestion, stress, and stay in excess of sleep. The simple cure method for diabetes is to help your patients get the Doshas back to their normal state of balance (Prakriti) (and all other diseases too).

How effective is Ayurveda?

While conventional medicine focuses on the patient’s primary symptom, Ayurveda views the patient holistically and addresses the underlying cause of the issue. Ayurveda assists you in making basic dietary adjustments and facilitates physical exercises such as Yoga – both of which assist the body in naturally fighting back.

Ayurveda is special in this regard. The old medical discipline treats a whole person, not part of himself. Not just a mix of extremities is our body. All the organs work together to keep us alive and safe.

Role of Ayurveda in Type 1 diabetes:

  • Helps regulate blood sugar
  • Cure and avoid problems in the skin, such as skin injuries and chronic skin infections
  • Prevent diabetic neuropathy with Manjishtadi Kwatham Tablets, Pravala Bhasmam Capsules, and Chandraprabha Vati medicines, etc.

Role of Ayurveda in pre-diabetes

  • Improvements in food and lifestyle contribute to stable blood sugar levels.
  • Simple Ayurvedic medications in lower doses, if improvements in diet and lifestyle do not heal fully.

Role of Ayurveda in Type 2 diabetes:

  • Maintain stable blood sugar levels using Ayurvedic medication and improvements in lifestyles and diets.
  • Ayurvedic medicines dependent on blood sugar levels are used in low to high doses
  • Suppress diabetes symptoms

Diabetes – Ayurvedic treatment

Ayurveda divides patients into two groups when it comes to diabetes treatment:
1. Obese (fat/stout/bulky/voluminous/overweight) patients.
2. lean (Thin)
• For obese individuals, the prescribed ayurvedic diabetes treatment is Vaman or, on occasion, Virechan or Basti, which are all forms of Panchakarma.
• Ayurvedic diabetes medicine is favoured over Panchakarma for the lean group.

The key concepts of ayurvedic diabetes treatment include increasing the Agni(digestive fire), both in the intestine and cellular levels, increasing the metabolism of the liver, reducing the load on the liver, and lowering Kapha and Meda in the body.

Ayurveda Therapy for Diabetes:

Ayurveda therapy diabetes- EliteAyurveda.

Panchakarma therapy greatly supports a person in diabetes management.

A patient first goes through pre-procedure treatments, which brace him or her for the procedures ahead.

To loosen the toxins and open up the circulation channels, the individual is given an oleation treatment, followed by a steam bath to prepare the body to eliminate these wastes.

Pre-operative therapies for Diabetes:

1. Kneading therapy with herbal powder:

In this treatment, highly soothing pastes are used on the skin of a person to alleviate mental stress, improve the memory capacity of the person, and calm the body and the Nervous System.
During this therapy, the herbal paste is used made from gooseberry, henna, asparagus, mooring, sandalwood, etc.

2. Oleation Therapy:

This therapy is for diabetes care First, an oil massage is carried out and then herbal oils or medically rich buttermilk are slowly poured on the forehead of an individual which relaxes the mind and reduces tension.
If this treatment is regularly pursued 2-3 weeks, it helps to manage diabetes.

3. Foot Massage Therapy:

It affects our hormonal secretions directly in the endocrine & metabolic systems. It increases the feeling of a positive factor in blood (hormones-serotonin etc.) to make a person relax.

Post – Procedure for Diabetes:

The person’s body is loosened and comfortable after the preoperative procedure. Panchakarma therapies are widely used by Ayurveda practitioners for the treatment of Diabetes Purgation & Medicated Enema.

  1. Purgation Therapy:

This therapy is particularly successful for diabetes and is carried out under strict supervision through Ayurvedic practitioners by vomiting by herbal medicines. The toxin in the upper sections of the body can be eliminated.

The patient has to drink medicated milk, tea, or herbal drink before the belly is full. A small amount of medicinal decoction is then provided with honey, made from black pepper, beetle killer root, and tamarind.
The vomiting is not painful in purgatory and a person is relaxed and light following it.

2. Medicated Enema Therapy:

Medicated enema therapy for the treatment of diabetes is strongly recommended. During the therapy, healed decoctions are used to extract accumulated contaminants and metabolic waste using an anal route by means of herbal pastes and oils like dill seeds, bael, honey, rock salt, etc.

 Post-operative therapies for Diabetes

If the pre-operative treatment has been completed, the person must be subjected to post-operative therapy to return to normal life easily. An individual should keep a strict diet in order to prevent a few foods that may be harmful. During this phase. Ayurvedic herbs and medicinal products must also be taken from time to time to heal and stabilize the body of a person.

1. Ayurvedic Diet:

In Ayurveda, food is medicine. The following are some basic diet recommendations for treating diabetes, especially Type II.

• Avoid foods that contain refined and processed sugars.

• Consume smaller portions and allow at least three hours between meals.

• Consume a number of whole vegetables and grains on a daily basis.

• Avoid all forms of alcohol

• Cook with less salt

• Limit your intake of rice, potatoes, sweet fruits, wheat, fried foods, and red meat.

2. Yoga:

Yoga therapy helps stimulate and enhance glucose homeostasis activity. Because of these postures, abdominal organs receive a good massage that enhances their respective organs’ work. The strength & elasticity of muscles also increases. Blood flow increases and hits the appropriate amounts of target organs that can help a diabetic patient quickly heal its wounds. Finally, the cellular level increases oxygenation.

What it is?

Diabetes is a condition in which the blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is abnormally high. Your primary source of nutrition is blood glucose, which comes from the food you consume. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, aids glucose absorption into cells for use as energy. Either your body doesn’t produce enough or any insulin, or it doesn’t use it properly. Glucose remains in your blood and does not enter your cells as a conclusion. Diabetes is a long-term disease in which the body is either unable to produce insulin or is unable to use the insulin it does produce properly. India used to be regarded as the world’s Diabetes capital, but it is now second only to China.

Types of Diabetes

Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes are the most common forms of diabetes.

Types of Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes

Your body does not produce insulin if you have type 1 diabetes. Your immune system attacks and kills the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas. Diabetes type 1 is most often diagnosed in children and young adults, but it can strike anyone at any age. To remain alive, people with type 1 diabetes must take insulin every day.

Symptoms of Type I Diabetes:

Apart from the average ages at which people develop type I and type II diabetes, the symptoms are almost identical in both cases. Symptoms of type I diabetes include:

  • Fatigue
  • Low Blood Sugar
  • Frequent Urination
  • Extreme Hunger
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Weight Loss
  • Extreme Thirst and Hunger
  • Change in the shape of eye lens causing blurry vision
  • Sores on the soles of feet

Type 2 diabetes

Your body does not produce or use insulin well if you have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can strike at any age, including childhood. This form of diabetes, on the other hand, is more common in middle-aged and older people. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type.

  • Lack of Exercise or degenerative lifestyle
  • Gender: Females are more prone to type II diabetes
  • Race and Geography
  • Insulin Resistance
  • Age and Family History
  • Prediabetes: Prediabetes is a condition in which a person’s blood sugar levels are higher than average but not to the point of diabetes. Individuals with prediabetes are at an increased risk of developing diabetes later in life.
Symptoms of Type II Diabetes:

Although we have tried to establish that Type I diabetes develops quickly in children and adolescents and Type II diabetes develops slowly in adults, it should be noted and understood that diabetes is a versatile disease in which adults in their later years can develop type I diabetes, as seen in children, and children can develop type II diabetes. Type II diabetes symptoms are similar to type I diabetes symptoms and include:

  • Weight loss without any efforts
  • Irritability
  • Confusion
  • Slower healing for sores and cuts
  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme thirst and hunger
  • Tingling of nerve ends
  • Rapid Heartbeat

Gestational diabetes

During pregnancy, some women develop gestational diabetes. This form of diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born. If you’ve had gestational diabetes, though, you’re more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life. It’s possible that diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy is probably type 2.

Other types of diabetes

Monogenic diabetes, which is a hereditary form of diabetes, and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes are two less common types.

Diabetes: Diagnosis

Blood sugar or diabetes is generally diagnosed via three simple tests:

  1. Fasting Glucose Test:

The fasting glucose test is performed before a person eats anything in the morning. The fasting glucose test is used to check a patient’s blood sugar levels after they haven’t eaten for 10-12 hours.

  1. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test:

The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) involves asking a person to drink a large amount of glucose in 30-60 minutes, followed by daily blood tests for up to 2-3 hours to determine the patient’s blood sugar absorption levels.

  1. A1c Test:

The A1c Test is a time-consuming test, but it is also the most accurate for predicting blood glucose levels and diagnosing diabetes. The A1c test measures the average of three months’ worth of blood sugar readings.

Treatment of Diabetes:

It should be known right away that, according to allopathy, diabetes has no cure once diagnosed; however, steps can be taken to monitor symptoms and slow the progression of the disease, and if a person is diagnosed with prediabetes, steps can be taken to prevent diabetes from developing. However, only type II diabetes can be avoided with early detection; type I diabetes cannot be prevented or cured; only the symptoms can be treated.

Type I diabetes is usually treated and managed by injecting a steady supply of insulin into the body. As a result, even though type I diabetes develops at a young age, it can be managed, monitored, and incorporated into a person’s daily routine from a young age.

Type II diabetes progresses over time, and a person must change his or her overall lifestyle in addition to taking insulin orally or through a syringe. To avoid the development of other complications, a patient with type 2 diabetes must lose weight and change his or her diet to include more blood sugar-balancing foods.

Development of Health Problems Associated with Diabetes

Over time, high blood glucose leads to problems such as

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Kidney disease
  • Eye problems
  • Dental disease
  • Nerve damage
  • Foot problems

Ayurvedic Approach

Ayurveda focuses on an individual’s general well-being, and therefore on the root cause of a disease. Ayurvedic physicians divide the human anatomy into doshas, dhatus, malas, and other body parts based on the attributes each body part exhibits, and conclude that a healthy body is a perfect balance between the doshas, dhatus, malas, and other body parts. Ayurvedic physicians have divided diabetes into over 20 types, with krisha meha (diabetes in lean people) and sthula meha (diabetes in obese people) described in the same way as type I and type II diabetes. Other forms of diabetes have been classified based on the cause of the disease and the symptoms that accompany it. Apart from some home remedies, there are some ayurvedic herbs and medicines that help the body control insulin and blood sugar levels while also focusing on pancreas rejuvenation.

Our Take

Dr. Soumya Hullannavar, our lead expert in diabetes treatment says, “The key is to maintain a natural method of controlling blood sugar levels, which can be accomplished by the use of Ayurvedic medicines. Ayurveda emphasises different diet and lifestyle changes as a long-term treatment for diabetes that can help a diabetic patient live a far healthier life.”

To understand Diabetes we need to know what diabetes really is and how it is treated or reversed by the Ayurvedic approach.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a range of diseases that include insulin hormone problems. The human body produces too much insulin diabetes. Normally, the pancreas releases insulin to help the body store and use sugar and fat from the food you consume.

Diabetes insipidus is another disorder of diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes insipidus is a rare disorder that causes the body to make a lot of “insipid” or colorless and odorless urine. Most people pee one to two quarters a day. People with diabetes insipidus will spend between 3 and 20 quarts a day.

Diabetes Types

There are three types of diabetes:

  • Type 1
  • Type 2 Diabetes mellitus,
  • Gestational diabetes.

Type I Diabetes

This type of diabetes is called juvenile diabetes because the body fails to make insulin. Insulin-dependent people with type I diabetes must take artificial insulin per day to remain alive.

Type 2 Diabetes

The body’s behavior with insulin depends on type 2 diabetes. Although the body still produces insulin, the cells of the body don’t respond as easily as before, as opposed to type I. According to the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases, this is the most prevalent form of diabetes and has a close connection with obesity.

Gestational diabetes

This type develops in women when the body is less susceptible to insulin during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes in all women does not develop and normally resolves after childbirth.

Monogenic diabetes and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes are less common diabetes types.

Diabetes Symptoms

Diabetes insipidus symptoms

  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequently peeing (your doctor might call this polyuria)
  • Frequently being up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom
  • Cool beverages are preferred.
  • Dehydration is a problem that many people face.
  • Deficiencies
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Irritation

Type 1 diabetes

The immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas (called beta cells), resulting in type 1 diabetes.

  • An increase in thirst
  • An increase in hunger (especially after eating)
  • Dry mouth
  • Peeing frequently
  • Weight loss that hasn’t been clarified (even though you are eating and feel hungry)
  • Tiredness (weak, tired feeling)
  • Vision is blurry.
  • Breathing that is labored and hard (Kussmaul respirations)
  • Insomnia (rare)

Type 2 diabetics Symptoms

Type 2 diabetics contain insulin. The insulin secreted by the pancreas, though, is either insufficient or the body is immune to it.
Symptoms are similar to those of type 1, but additional symptoms may include:

  • Cuts or sores that take a long time to recover
  • Itchy skin (usually in the vaginal or groin area)
  • Infections of yeast
  • Weight raise in recent months
  • Hands and foot numbness or tingling
  • Impotence or erectile dysfunction.

Symptoms of diabetes

Common Causes of diabetes

what causes diabetes?

Diabetes happens as one of those cases happens:

  • If there is no insulation from the pancreas
  • If the pancreas does no insulin
  • If the body does not react to insulin adequately, a condition called “insulin resistance”
  • ADHD hormone that does not function to help the body regulate liquids is diabetes insipidus.
  • Causes are likely with a brain injury or a tumor.
  • Kidney disease or medicaments such as lithium may induce the less common form.

How Common it is?

The prevalence of diabetes in India has remained at 11.8% in the last four years.

Options for treatment

Risk Factors

Diabetes: Type 1

If you are a child or teenager, if you have a parent or relative with the disorder or if you have some genes related to the disease, you are more likely to get type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes: Type 2

Your risk for type 2 diabetes improves if you:

  • Are overweight.
  • Are 45 or older.
  • your family members had the disease.
  • Don’t exercise.
  • Have prediabetes.
  • have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or high triglycerides.
  • Have gestational diabetics.

Gestational diabetes

Your chance for gestational diabetes improves if you:

  • Are overweight.
  • Are over age 25.
  • Have a family history of type 2 diabetes.
  • Have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Line of Treatment

Ayurvedic Treatment Approach for Diabetes

Ayurvedic classics recommend two distinct types of therapy schedules for diabetics, depending on their physical constitution or body form (Prakriti), as well as their health status. They are as follows:
Apatarpana is a de-nourishment therapy that is beneficial to obese diabetic patients, particularly those with the Kapha body type.
Santarpana – Nourishing therapy – effective in diabetic patients who are thin, typically those with a Vata or Pitta body shape.

Therapies such as Vamana, virechana, basti can be performed according to the individual’s condition.

Diabetes and Lifestyle

Pathya: (Do’s):

  • To eat a healthy diet.
  • Exercising frequently.
  • Yoga.
  • Meditation
  • Pranayama
  • Keeping a normal body weight.
  • Practice walking.

Apathya (Don’ts):

  • Restriction on sugar and fried foods, and also dairy products.
  • Stress and fear
  • Cigarettes
  • Drink.
  • Fatty foods and oils.
  • Refusal of day sleeping and laziness.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Diabetes:

ayurvedic herbs for diabetes treatment

Banyan tree bark

Bottom Line

Some types of diabetes (such as type 1) are exacerbated by genetic, environmental, and behavioral causes that are out of control.
Type 2 diabetes can be avoided by making healthy diet and exercise decisions and losing weight.

Be aware of diabetes complications by seeing the doctor. If you suffer from prediabetes, have your blood sugar checked, and follow your doctor’s recommendations for treating this condition.
As per Dr. Soumya Hullannavar, Lead Consultant at Elite Ayurveda, an expert in Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes, we can prevent our body from pursuing a holistic healing procedure, which according to her, is the stepping stone for treatment of any disease.

OUR TAKE

“A natural way to regulate blood sugar is crucial and can be achieved by taking up Ayurvedic herbal remedies. As a long-term disease management strategy, Ayurveda significantly stresses upon proper nutrition and lifestyle improvements which can improve the wellbeing of a diabetic patient.” Dr. Soumya Hullannavar of Elite Ayurveda Services.
