Is there anything different that healthcare workers could do to help people with diabetes who are having a hard time? And what can people who already have diabetes do?

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to hear many stories from people who know what it’s like to live with diabetes. people who know about having diabetes.

Many of these are inspiring stories about how people have gotten through hard times with diabetes by getting help and strength from others. But there have also been too many cases where people say the problems are too hard to overcome, especially when they have to deal with stigma from the public or their healthcare providers. This is very disappointing for someone who has spent almost all of their working life trying to make life easier for people with the condition.

Diabetes is always there, it’s a part of you all the time, and there’s no way to take a day off without possibly getting hurt. Still, there are a lot of myths about diabetes and how to treat it. This can cause people with diabetes to be judged and questioned about how they live their lives.

Pressure to make choices

Researchers at Stanford University found that people with diabetes, especially those who use insulin to control their condition, make 180 more decisions about their health every day than people without diabetes. So, it must be very frustrating when people ask if that means you have to eat a lot of sweets or question your diagnosis because you are not fat.

Trying to hear and listen

These judgements can be boring, tiring, and hurtful. They can add to the already heavy burden of having diabetes and make some people feel even worse. And remind me that we still have a lot of work to do to get the word out about type 1 diabetes, explain the difference between type 1 and type 2, and make sure people know how living with this condition can affect your physical and mental health. That’s why it’s so important for each of us to listen to the stories of other people and really “hear” them.

When people are upset about something, they might not think as clearly or care as much about themselves. This could make them think that ignoring their diabetes is the best thing to do. But, from what I’ve seen, this is often the path with the most difficult terrain, making it harder for a person with diabetes to get around.

It’s fair to say that healthcare professionals are all unique people with their own stories, backgrounds, personal situations, and ways of communicating. Even though they probably have good intentions, they don’t always give people with long-term health conditions what they need.

Goals that can be reached

But people with diabetes only see their diabetes healthcare professional for about 3 hours a year. Instead of criticising when and where things have gone wrong, this time could be used to listen to people and help them set goals they can reach.

The good news is that good work is being done in healthcare and diabetes research to figure out what people with diabetes need and make improvements that can help. This includes making wearable tech like insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, immunotherapies for people who have just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes or are at risk of getting it, islet cell transplantation, and artificial pancreas systems.

No criticism, just motivation

People in healthcare settings are also becoming more aware of the need to ask people about how diabetes affects their lives and how they are doing in general, not just about their numbers. There are many ways to set short-term goals that will help you reach your long-term goals and stay motivated without being judged. And I hope with all my heart that this will be the case in every diabetes clinic.

Did you know that even extremely obese individuals are 70% less likely to develop diabetes if they lose 5% of their body weight? Surprising, isn’t it? This is the effect of consistent physical activity and exercise on the body. Regular exercise will provide you with mental and physical benefits regardless of your age and gender. The only difference with diabetes is that you will need to monitor your blood sugar levels before and after exercise. Before beginning any type of physical activity, it is essential to consult a physician. This additional effort should not serve as an excuse to avoid exercise. In this blog, we will discuss the significance of exercise for diabetics and how to begin a workout regimen.

Inactivity may exacerbate diabetes.

The natural response to persistent fatigue and exhaustion is to cease physical activity. A large number of diabetes patients believe and feel that they have no control over their condition beyond taking medications and insulin injections. While it is understandable that diabetes makes it difficult to perform certain tasks, it is still possible to engage in daily physical activity, such as a 20-minute walk in the park, gardening, or performing yoga asanas. Physical inactivity can be the greatest error a person can make because it can exacerbate diabetes symptoms and lead to complications. It also increases the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease, obesity, joint problems, hypertension, and depression.

Benefits of Physical Activity for Diabetic Patients

Putting these drawbacks aside, let us now consider the advantages of regular physical activity for people with diabetes. Regular exercise can:

increase your body’s sensitivity to insulin

help manage your blood glucose levels

keep your weight in check

make you feel healthier & energetic

reduce your levels of stress

reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and nerve damage

prevent diabetes complications

Here’s how diabetics can begin an exercise regimen.

Consult with your physician prior to beginning an exercise regimen. According to your sugar levels, the doctor can recommend a suitable exercise regimen. Following a personalised consultation at DRC, we will recommend yoga asanas, pranayama, an exercise routine, and a diet chart that are appropriate for your body type and condition.

Please do not launch into an intense workout routine or 30-minute cardio session on the first day of your exercise programme. Start slowly and maintain consistency in your exercise regimen. You can begin with a 5-10 minute walk and increase it to 30 minutes within a month. You can avoid using the lift by taking the stairs, walking to nearby locations, or walking your dog.

Checking your blood sugar levels before and after exercise is essential. Do not exercise if your blood sugar is below 100 mg/dL or above 250-300 mg/dL. If you experience dizziness, shortness of breath, disorientation, or pain, consume a snack. It is essential to warm up, cool down, and stretch before and after a workout session to prevent injury and muscle soreness, both of which can reduce motivation.

This may sound like difficult advice, particularly for those who dislike exercise, but trust us, it’s not that difficult. After establishing a routine, it will become an integral part of your lifestyle. Find a workout partner or enlist a friend or family member for assistance.

Do something you enjoy; a gym membership is not required to lose weight or be physically active. You can dance with your children at home, play with them in the park, go swimming, garden or cycle, or practise highly beneficial and relaxing pranayama (breathing techniques).

Contact our expert Ayurvedic physicians if you have any questions or concerns about your ongoing diabetes treatment, diet, lifestyle, or any other matter. They will gladly assist you in regaining control of your blood sugar levels. You can also begin Ayurvedic treatment in addition to your standard diabetes medication. Our doctors recommend an Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes that addresses the underlying cause of your condition and manages your diabetes with the aid of special herbs and rasayanas.

Not only does DRC’s Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes help rejuvenate the body from within, but it also prevents the disease’s progression and complications. Gradually, the treatment will reduce your dependence on insulin and diabetic pills while enhancing your quality of life overall.

The Hereditary Nature of Diabetes: An Ayurvedic Perspective

Diabetes, often referred to as the silent epidemic, has become one of the most prevalent chronic conditions worldwide. While lifestyle choices such as diet, physical activity, and stress levels play a significant role in its onset, the hereditary nature of diabetes cannot be ignored. At EliteAyurveda, we approach diabetes not just as a metabolic disorder but as a condition deeply rooted in genetic predisposition, lifestyle habits, and doshic imbalances. Our goal is to offer a holistic path to manage and potentially reverse the condition.

Hereditary Nature of Diabetes
Hereditary Nature of Diabetes

Understanding Diabetes and Genetics

The Role of Genetics in Diabetes

Genetics significantly influence the likelihood of developing diabetes. However, the role differs between Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and Type 2 Diabetes (T2D):

  • Type 1 Diabetes (T1D):
T1D is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
    • Genetic predisposition: Specific genes, such as those in the HLA region, are linked to T1D (Smith, 2020).
    • Environmental triggers: Viral infections or dietary factors may activate these genetic tendencies.
  • Type 2 Diabetes (T2D):
T2D, characterized by insulin resistance and reduced insulin production, has a stronger hereditary component.
    • Family history: If one parent has T2D, the risk increases; if both parents have it, the chances rise exponentially (Doe, 2019).
    • Polygenic nature: Multiple genes interact with lifestyle factors to determine the risk.

Ayurveda’s Take on the Hereditary Nature of Diabetes

In Ayurveda, diabetes is referred to as “Madhumeha,” classified under Prameha (a group of urinary disorders). Ayurveda acknowledges the role of Sahaja Prakriti (inherited constitution) and Beeja Dosha (genetic predisposition) in the development of diseases, including diabetes (Sharma & Patel, 2018).

Key Ayurvedic Insights:

  • Beeja Dosha: Genetic defects in the “seed” (sperm or ovum) passed down from parents contribute to the susceptibility to diabetes.
  • Karmaja Factors: The accumulated actions or karma of ancestors may also influence genetic predispositions.
  • Doshic Imbalance:
    • Kapha: Governs the metabolic and storage aspects, leading to obesity and insulin resistance.
    • Pitta: Manages digestion and hormone regulation, with imbalances affecting insulin production.
    • Vata: Controls nerve functions; its disturbance can lead to complications like diabetic neuropathy.

Ayurveda emphasizes that while genetics lay the foundation, lifestyle choices and doshic balance determine whether diabetes manifests (Kumar, 2019).

Challenges Faced by Individuals with Genetic Risk

Physical Challenges

  1. Early Onset: People with a strong family history may develop diabetes at a younger age.
  2. Progression of Complications: Genetic predisposition often leads to faster development of complications like neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy.
  3. Weight Management: Obesity, linked to insulin resistance, is more common in genetically predisposed individuals.

Emotional and Social Challenges

  1. Fear of Diagnosis: Growing up in a family with diabetic relatives creates anxiety about personal health.
  2. Dietary Dilemmas: Restrictive diets can lead to feelings of deprivation, particularly in social settings.
  3. Guilt and Responsibility: Parents with diabetes may feel guilty about passing on the condition to their children.

Mismanagement and Overlooked Risk Factors

  1. Delayed Screening: People often neglect early screenings despite family history, leading to late diagnoses.
  2. Lifestyle Neglect: An assumption that genetic predisposition guarantees diabetes often results in poor lifestyle choices.

(Smith, 2020; Johnson, 2020)

The Ayurvedic Approach to Managing Hereditary Diabetes

At EliteAyurveda, we believe that genetic predisposition does not equate to inevitability. Our personalized treatment plans combine ancient wisdom with modern insights to help patients prevent, manage, and even reverse diabetes (Hullanavar, 2021).

1. Detoxification and Rejuvenation

Ayurveda emphasizes the removal of toxins (Ama) to balance the doshas:

  • Panchakarma Therapies: Gentle detoxification therapies tailored to each individual help cleanse the body.
  • Herbal Formulations: Personalized herbal medications purify the blood, improve digestion, and enhance insulin sensitivity (Sharma & Patel, 2018).

2. Personalized Diet Plans

Diet is the cornerstone of diabetes management in Ayurveda:

  • Kapha-Pacifying Foods: Focus on light, low-fat, and low-sugar foods.
  • Low-Glycemic Index Choices: Incorporate whole grains, legumes, and fresh vegetables.
  • Digestive Aids: Include spices like cumin, turmeric, and fenugreek to support digestion and prevent toxin buildup (Kumar, 2019).

3. Stress Management

Stress is a significant trigger for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. We incorporate:

  • Yoga: Specific asanas like Paschimottanasana and Dhanurasana improve pancreatic function.
  • Meditation: Calms the mind and balances cortisol levels, which affect blood sugar regulation (Doe, 2019).

4. Lifestyle Modifications

Daily routines are tailored to mitigate the hereditary risk of diabetes:

  • Regular physical activity such as brisk walking or swimming.
  • Early dinners to align with circadian rhythms and improve glucose metabolism.
  • Avoiding processed foods and sugary beverages (Smith, 2020).

5. Ongoing Support

At EliteAyurveda, we provide continuous monitoring and support:

  • Regular follow-ups to adjust treatment plans as needed.
  • Guidance on maintaining long-term lifestyle changes (Hullanavar, 2021).

Ramesh K., Bengaluru (Patient testimonial, 2023)

– Moulanchikkal (2021)

Diabetes patients frequently suffer from skin disorders. Diabetes affects the body’s sweat glands and typically decreases skin perspiration. In this article, we will discuss some preventative measures for skin-related issues.

Highlights

Hot baths are drying. Ignore them.

Immediately after bathing, you should moisturise your skin.

Use mild and gentle skin care products if you suffer from dry, itchy skin.

Utilize a lip balm or petroleum jelly to alleviate chapped lips.

During the course of their disease, it is not uncommon for diabetics to experience a skin disorder. This is because diabetes affects the body’s sweat glands and typically reduces skin perspiration. Moreover, elevated sugar levels cause nerve damage and a diminished sense of feeling. This impacts a person’s capacity to heal simple wounds. This can result in skin conditions such as a diabetic rash, diabetic blisters, rashes, psoriasis, and fungal infections. As psoriasis is a serious skin disease, please consult a physician for Ayurvedic treatment options.

Listed below are a few skincare tips that can help diabetics take care of their sensitive skin and reduce their problems:

Avoid hot baths because they dry out the skin. Rather, choose a cold shower. It locks in the skin’s moisture and reduces stress. `

Immediately after bathing, you should moisturise your skin. Two to three times per week, massage your entire body with essential oils. This prevents moisture loss and reduces itching.

Use toiletries that are mild, gentle, and chemical-free to avoid itchy and dry skin.

In the winter, the cold causes dry or inflamed skin. This can be avoided by using a humidifier. If you do not wish to purchase the machine, you can easily create a similar effect at home. Place a large pot of water over a moderate flame for several hours. This water can also be flavoured with turmeric (haldi) and ginger (adrak) spices and herbs. This steam helps your skin recover from damage and restores moisture when you soak in it.

Your skin is extremely susceptible to abrasions and burns due to the nerve damage. To avoid infection, apply sterile gauze pads to even the smallest wounds.

Lips that are dry and cracked can be as harmful as an open wound. Utilize a lip balm or petroleum jelly to alleviate chapped lips.

Diabetes and Gum Disease: Understanding the Link Through Ayurveda

The connection between diabetes and gum disease is often overlooked, yet it plays a significant role in overall health (American Diabetes Association, 2022). Both conditions are chronic and interconnected, creating a vicious cycle of inflammation and poor healing. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to managing these issues, focusing on balancing doshas, improving digestion, and promoting oral and systemic health (Gupta & Singh, 2017).

Diabetes and Gum Disease

Diabetes and Gum Disease

How Diabetes Affects Gum Health

Impact of Diabetes on GumsSymptoms Observed
Weakened Immunity: High blood sugar impairs the immune system, reducing the body’s ability to fight infections (Jones, 2020).Swollen, red, and bleeding gums.
Poor Circulation: Reduced blood flow affects healing, increasing the risk of infections like gingivitis and periodontitis (Miller & Thompson, 2020).Slow healing of oral sores.
Dry Mouth: Diabetes can decrease saliva production, leading to dry mouth and an increased risk of cavities (American Dental Association, 2021).Persistent dryness and discomfort in the mouth.
Increased Glucose in Saliva: High sugar levels in saliva feed harmful bacteria, exacerbating gum disease (Smith, 2019).Frequent bad breath and plaque buildup.

Ayurveda’s Perspective on Diabetes and Gum Disease

In Ayurveda, diabetes is referred to as Madhumeha, a condition caused by imbalances in the Kapha and Vata doshas (Chauhan, 2021). Gum disease, linked to excessive heat and inflammation, is often attributed to aggravated Pitta dosha in the oral cavity.

Ayurvedic Insights:

  • Kapha Imbalance: Leads to excess mucus and bacterial growth in the mouth.

Do you not eat sweets because they make your blood sugar go up and you don’t feel well after eating them? There are ways to eat sweets that won’t mess up your blood sugar levels or make you feel bad.

There are foods that don’t go well together, but there are also foods that go well together and work well together. Not only do some foods digest well together, but the way they go together also makes their nutrients more bioavailable and reduces any bad affects they might have on their own.

Dates, spices, and nuts are all great examples of this.

Dates

Dates are part of the earth element, but their sattvic nature keeps them from making you feel heavy or tired. When something is sattvic, it makes people feel calm, clear, and aware.

Dates also have a lot of ojas. Ojas is the refined essence of our body’s tissues. It has to do with power, immunity, and stable energy. When someone needs to feel better, like after being sick or giving birth, or when they are old and need a boost, ojas-rich substances are suggested.

Dates are very sweet, but their glycemic index, which is around 42, is not as high as many other foods. This chart shows the glycemic index of some popular foods, including dates.

Nutrient profile: potassium, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, B vitamins, soluble fibre

Dates taste good in many different ways! This list of types will help you figure out which one you like.

Cinnamon

It’s well known that cinnamon can help keep blood sugar in check. As it warms and wakes you up, it helps your body break down sweet foods. Dates go well with cinnamon because it can control how the body uses fat and sugar. Those with type II diabetes or insulin resistance can also enjoy dates with the help of cinnamon.

But that’s not all that cinnamon can do. Cinnamon can also get rid of toxins, give you more energy, clear your nose, and help you cough. It also works well with the defence system because it kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Nuts: Usually, when we eat something sweet along with protein and fat, the protein and fat help to slow the release of sugar into the bloodstream and keep blood glucose levels from going up too quickly.

Hazelnuts “fall” into the autumn group of foods. Hazelnuts are good for the fat tissue, lymph, and blood plasma because they are high in nutrients, fat, and protein.

Now, let’s put them all together to make a treat you can feel good about eating!

RECIPE: HAZELNUT STUFFED DATES ROLLED IN CINNAMON Ingredients

*You should use about three almonds for every date.

Dates: Medjool dates are soft and tasty, and they are the right size for packing.

Hazelnuts: Toast the nuts and let them cool before putting them in the middle.

Cinnamon powder: Use good cinnamon, like Ceylon cinnamon that is grown organically.

Optional: flakes of coconut

Directions

Stuff three almonds into each date, then roll in cinnamon. Dates should be soft enough that cinnamon sticks easily to them.

if you want, roll in coconut flakes.

Endocrine Disorders and Obesity: An Ayurvedic Perspective on Root-Cause Healing

Obesity is not just about excess weight—it is a complex metabolic disorder influenced by hormonal imbalances, digestive inefficiencies, and toxin accumulation in the body. The endocrine system, which regulates hormones, plays a crucial role in metabolism, appetite, and fat storage. When hormones are out of balance, unexplained weight gain, metabolic slowdowns, and obesity-related complications arise.

At EliteAyurveda, under the guidance of Dr. Adil Moulanchikkal, we adopt an Ayurvedic root-cause approach that corrects hormonal imbalances, improves digestion (Agni), and eliminates toxins (Ama) to restore healthy metabolism naturally.

📖 Understanding the Connection Between Endocrine Disorders & Obesity

In modern medicine, obesity is often linked to insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, cortisol imbalance, and reproductive hormone disruptions. However, Ayurveda views obesity as a disorder caused by Kapha and Medo Dhatu (fat tissue) imbalances, weak Agni (digestive fire), and Ama (toxins) blocking metabolic pathways.

“Ati Sthoulya (obesity) is caused by Medo Dhatu Vriddhi (excess fat tissue accumulation) and Mandagni (weak digestive fire), leading to slow metabolism and disease progression.”
Charaka Samhita

Overviewcomplications of diabetes

Ayurveda is a science that originated in India and has been practiced for thousands of years. It’s an ancient form of medicine that focuses on the wellness of the mind, body, and spirit. Many people turn to Ayurveda when they are looking for holistic healing from chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, COPD or chronic kidney disease because it offers natural remedies without side effects. In this blog post we will discuss how Ayurveda can be used to combat these diseases while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

What are chronic illnesses?

Chronic illnesses are long-term health problems that can last for months or years. Chronic diseases and conditions can include heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and more.

Most of the time, chronic illnesses are caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. They affect a variety of demographics and are treated in different ways. Some conditions are not able to be completely cured, but they can be managed to lower the impact of symptoms on your life.

There are many treatment options for chronic illnesses, some treatments include medication management and therapy while others involve surgery or other medical procedures. The good news is Ayurveda medicine has several ways of combating these issues at their core!

Ayurvedic view on chronic illnesses

According to Ayurvedic philosophy, chronic conditions are thought to be caused by long-term imbalances in the body. In Ayurveda medicine, one’s health is determined by three different doshas: vata (air), pitta (fire), and kapha (water). Balancing these doshas helps prevent illness from taking hold of the body.

In general, chronic diseases are often characterized by a lack of energy and exhaustion from the patient’s side. This is called Ama in Ayurveda medicine.

Ama occurs when toxins build up throughout the body because it cannot eliminate them as quickly as they’re building up due to certain lifestyle habits like a poor diet or lack of exercise.

There are several different types of toxins that build up in the body, and these correspond with particular doshas or mind-body types as per Ayurvedic medicine. For example, Kapha dosha is characterized by excess mucus buildup throughout the body.

Kapha generally feels sluggish and heavy, which can be a result of excess mucus in the body that slows down energy flow and movement throughout various organs like the heart, lungs, and kidneys. This is why Ayurveda medicine recommends practices such as yoga to help stimulate certain organ systems with more energy while also helping clear out excess mucus from the body.

Another example is Pitta dosha, which is associated with excess heat and irritation in the body that can lead to inflammation throughout certain organs. The lungs are particularly affected by this excess heat or fire energy, so Ayurvedic practices may recommend cooling foods like cucumbers and watermelon while avoiding spicy ones.

Some ways that Ayurveda can help with chronic conditions include:

  • Using foods to create balance in the body and maintain health, especially by balancing vata dosha, which is associated with all movement within the body such as breathing, heart rate, etc. Vata types need a lot of protein and fat or they could get anxious, depressed, or get memory loss.
  • Using oils in the body to build tissues and lubricate joints, which is beneficial for all types of conditions but especially arthritis.
  • Relaxing mind and body activities including yoga.

This holistic approach prioritizes natural remedies for restoring balance within the body, mind, and spirit. This includes herbal supplements as well as dietary changes that combat the symptoms and progression of chronic illnesses.

How Ayurveda combats chronic illnesses

In tandem with conventional medicine and treatments (dialysis helps patients with CKD function with kidney failure, for instance), Ayurveda focuses on treating the root cause of a disease, rather than suppressing symptoms.

Ayurvedic treatments have been shown to effectively treat cardiovascular diseases by including cardiac drugs in treatment plans that help lower cholesterol levels, increase HDL (or “good”) cholesterol, and lower triglycerides. Ayurveda also helps patients suffering from diabetes by focusing on dietetic changes, counseling patients to avoid alcohol consumption and maintain a healthy BMI (body mass index).

Ayurvedic medicine has been used for centuries in India, where it originated. It is now gaining traction around the world. While it may not be able to cure chronic conditions that have progressed into later stages, this practice of medicine can prevent early-stage chronic conditions from progressing. Ayurvedic practices may also be able to lower the need for medication in those who have been prescribed it. Ayurveda can help prevent chronic conditions from worsening, helping patients live a better life despite their condition.

The history of Ayurveda and chronic conditions

According to research, Ayurveda medicine has been used for over two thousand years, with its earliest mentions in the Vedas. Ayurveda medicine is based on three main principles: the three doshas, the five elements that comprise everything in existence, and a multi-step process of cleansing.

This practice is based on the idea that our bodies are composed of these six elements: ether, air, fire, water, earth, and space. These complexes make up every part of us from physical to mental states.

Ayurvedic practices can help treat chronic conditions by reducing symptoms and preventing further progression of the disease. The practice focuses on prevention rather than treatment-based care because it can lead to better long-term results.

Historically, patients with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, chronic kidney disease, and COPD would only receive palliative care. Palliation involves managing the patient’s symptoms without actually curing them of their condition. Patients with these types of conditions can be prescribed Ayurvedic supplements to help manage their diet and lifestyle changes that go along with their chronic illness.

The success of Ayurvedic medicine can be seen in the numbers. Over the last four decades, there has been a significant decrease in heart disease and diabetes mortality rates. In India, it is estimated that over half of all individuals with chronic illness can be treated through Ayurvedic medicine alone.

Overview: Diabetes Complication

complications of diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases that influence blood sugar in your body (glucose). Glucose is crucial to your health, as it is a significant source of energy for the muscles and tissues in your cells. It’s the main source of fuel for your brain, too.

The cause of diabetes varies according to type. However, it can lead to excess sugar in your blood, no matter what kind of diabolic you are having. Too much sugar can cause serious health problems in your blood.

Type1 diabetes and Type2 diabetes are chronic conditions. Prediabetes and gestational diabetes are potentially reversible. Prediabetes occurs when the levels of your blood sugar are higher than normal, but not as high as normal for diabetic treatment. And, if adequate actions to prevent progression, prediabetes is often the precursor to diabetes. Gestational diabetes happens during pregnancy, but can resolve after delivery of the baby.

Diabetes people need to monitor and control their blood sugar routinely. Regardless of how careful you may be, a problem is still possible.

You may experience two kinds of complications: acute and chronic. Acute complications need emergency treatment. Hypoglycemia and ketoacidosis are examples.

These conditions may cause, if left untreated:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Death
  • Seizures

Chronic complications happen if diabetes is not properly managed. High blood sugar levels result from diabetes. High blood sugar levels, if not well controlled over time, could damage different organs, including:

  • eyes
  • kidneys
  • heart
  • skin

Nervous damage can also result from unmanaged diabetes.

What are diabetes-related complications?

Over period, the surge and crash of dissolved glucose and insular disease in many organisms and systems can lead to irreparable damage. Doctors call it “end-organ damage,” because almost any organ system in the body can be affected:

Hypertension (high blood pressure) and Heart Disease

Hypertension in people with type 2 diabetes is almost uniformly found. As blood glucose levels rise, our bodies try to use different ways to reduce their glucose concentration to “normal.” One way that the body tries to do this is by maintaining more fluid in the vessels. This additional fluid increases pressure in the vessels. Increased blood pressure leads, in turn, to a widespread circulatory system weakness. In some extreme circumstances, this can lead to a bursting of blood vessels (e.g. stroke) or develop chronic flow problems in the extremities of the limbs or other peripheral parts of the body. The beginning of atherosclerotic plaques inside blood vessel walls, resulting in a further danger of aneurysm, hypertension, stroke and heart attack, has also led to chronically high level of insulin.

Eye disease

Untreated diabetes can lead to a wide variety of blindness and vision problems. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of acquired blindness among those under the age of 65 years. People with diabetes suffer from blood vessel and nerve damage to the back of the eye, an area known as the retina. This results in the “diabetes retinopathy” condition. Diabetes can also cause abnormal new capillary growth within the retina that decreases blood flow and weakens vision. Vision damage is permanent once it occurs. However, many diabetes-related vision problems may be repaired or avoided as soon as possible. Diabetes individuals should be examined by an eye doctor once annually. Diabetes can prevent eye problems through proper control of their blood glucose, lower blood pressure, and lower cholesterol levels.

Oral complications

Diabetes persons are at increased risk of gum inflammation (periodontitis) in cases where glucose is not managed properly. Periodontitis is a major cause of tooth loss and has a high cardiovascular disease risk (CVD). Regular oral checks should also be set up to ensure early diagnosis and quick handling of oral complications in people with diabetes in particular among people with previously diagnosed diabetes. For symptoms of gum disease like bleeding while brushing your teeth or swollen gums, annual visits are recommended.

Kidney Disease (Nephropathy)

The main job of the kidneys is the blood filter. Sugar filtered from the blood damages the blood of your diabetes’ blood vessels over time in your kidneys. The process is referred to as “diabetic nephropathy.” Diabetes can cause insufficient nesting in extreme circumstances, requiring frequent and expensive dialysis (blood filtration) or risky, costly and difficult renal transplantation. The first reason Americans are on dialysis is diabetes. Physicians test the urine for kidney failure for patients with diabetes.

Nerve Damage (Neuropathy)

The blood sugar damages the nervous peripheral system (that part of the nervous system that works the arms, legs and other extremities). In the hands and/or feet the patients affected report pain, tingling, and/or buzzing. Complete engorgement (sensational loss) is common in the limbs too. Patients may lose control of the bladder or their walking ability. Male loss of sexual ability (impotence or erectile dysfunction) can also take place.

Problems with joint and foot

Poor flow of blood into the limb, combined with nerve damage and decreased or deadened sensation lead to limbs (feet, hands) being easily susceptible to damage and illness. Joint damage (which is caused by lack of pain sensation) and feet ulcers is common. Diabetes-related foot and limb problems can usually be helped with correct treatment. However, wounds can become infected and limbs may need amputation without treatment. Diabetes people must conduct self-foot checks daily and must undergo a foot exam once a year by the healthcare professional.

Skin infections

Diabetes can lead to various skin conditions, including infections with fungus (yeasts) and bacteria, a diabetic dermopathy of skin, a wide range of spots and skin rashes. Most of these conditions are related to chronically elevated blood sugar levels, which decrease when blood sugar is controlled. Diabetes individuals are also at increased risk of any kind of infection due to impaired immunity (ability to fight infection). That is why annual flu vaccines and pneumococcal vaccines every five years is important for people who have diabetes.

Cognitive problems

The brain is also affected by diabetes, one of the organ’s most affected by blood sugar fluctuations. Chronic diabetes that is uncontrolled appears to be associated with memory problems and elderly dementia and may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. Elevated blood sugar levels have been observed with increased difficulty with mental arithmetic and decreased mental fluid performance in younger patients with type 1 diabetes. As sugar levels decreased, this slowdown in cognitive activities was reversible.

Erectile dysfunction (ED)

It takes place once blood vessels and nerves are damaged in the penis. One of the major causes of ED for men with diabetes is vascular disease. ED may also appear in certain medications as a side effect. The condition can also occur as the prostate glans or the bladder are affected. It can also come from some lifestyle choices, like smoking and overweight. Or emotionally, stress and anxiety are factors.

Diabetes Gestational Complications

Most women with gestational diabetes give babies healthy. However, your and your baby may have problems with uncontrolled or unchecked blood sugar levels.

Diabetes gestational complications can occur in your baby, along with:

Excess growth: The placenta, which causes the baby pancreas to make an extra insulin, can be crossed by additional glucose. This can make your baby grow too big (macrosomia). Very big babies will require a C section birth more likely.

Low-blood sugar: Moms with gestational diabetes sometimes develop low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) soon after birth, because their own production of insulin is high. Prompt feeds and an intravenous solution of glucose sometimes can normalize the baby’s blood sugar.

Type 2 diabetes later in life: The risk of developing obesity and diabetes type 2 in the future for mothers with gestational diabetes is higher.

Death: Untreated gestational diabetes can cause death of the baby before or soon after birth.

Due to gestational diabetes, complications may also occur in mom, including:

Preeclampsia

High blood pressure, excessive protein in the urine and inflammation of the legs and feet characterize the condition. Preeclampsia could lead both mother and baby to serious or life-threatening complications.

Subsequent gestational diabetes

After you have gestational diabetes during one pregnancy, the next pregnancy will give you more chance of getting it again. Diabetes — typically type 2 diabetes — is also more likely to occur as you get old.

Prediabetes Complications

Prediabetes may become diabetes of type 2.

PREDIABETES: AN OVERVIEW

What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes-eliteayurveda

Prediabetes is a condition in which the blood sugar level is greater than average. While it is not currently high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes, children and adults with prediabetes are much more likely to experience type 2 diabetes if no lifestyle changes are made. Individuals with prediabetes have a 50% risk of having diabetes over the next five to ten years.

If you have prediabetes, the long-term risk associated with diabetes — especially to the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys — may have already started. However, there is some positive news. It is not necessary to progress from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes.

Treatment for prediabetes will help you avoid developing more severe health problems, such as type 2 diabetes and problems with the pulse, blood vessels, eyes, and kidneys.

Consuming nutritious meals, implementing physical exercise into your everyday schedule, and maintaining a healthy weight will all help restore your blood sugar level to usual. The same dietary changes that may help adults avoid type 2 diabetes can also help children regain natural blood sugar levels.

SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES

What are the signs and symptoms of prediabetes?

There are usually no signs or symptoms of prediabetes.

The darker skin on some areas of the body is a possible symptom of prediabetes. The neck, armpits, shoulders, knees, and knuckles can be included in the affected areas.

If you are having symptoms, you can notice that:
  • You’re significantly more thirsty than normal.
  • You urinate frequently.
  • You are Extremely Hungry.
  • You are Fatigued.
  • Your vision seems to be blurry.
  • You’re significantly more tired than normal.

What causes prediabetes?

Prediabetes has no clear cause. However, it appears that family history and genetics play a part. A lack of daily physical exercise and being overweight and having extra fat across the waist seems to be significant causes.

Obviously, individuals with Prediabetes are no longer able to efficiently absorb sugar (glucose). As a result, instead of providing energy to the cells that make up muscles and other tissues, sugar builds up in the bloodstream. Food provides the majority of the glucose in the body. Sugar reaches the body when food is digested. Insulin is a hormone that helps sugar move from your bloodstream to your body’s cells. This insulin is produced by your pancreas. Insulin enables blood glucose in your cells to be used as storage for your liver. Your cells do not respond as appropriate to insulin in prediabetes.

In the cycle of prediabetes:

  • Insulin resistance develops in cells. Their insulin reaction becomes slow or nonexistent.
  • The pancreas produces more insulin in an attempt to elicit a response from the cells.
  • The excess insulin compensates for the poor reaction for a bit. The levels of blood sugar remain normal.
  • The pancreas will eventually be unable to keep up with demand. Glucose that isn’t used for your cells remains in your blood.
  • The blood sugar level continues to rise. A blood test can reveal prediabetes at this stage.

If you don’t get medication, you might develop Type 2 diabetes.

What factors contribute to insulin resistance?
Researchers aren’t sure what induces cells to become immune to insulin. It’s likely, though, that being overweight and physically inactive play a role:
• Belly fat can cause the body to become inflamed, which can lead to insulin resistance.
• Exercise induces physiological modifications that aid in the control of blood sugar levels. It is impossible to preserve the equilibrium while there is a lack of activity.

RISK FACTORS & COMPLICATIONS

Who is at risk of developing prediabetes?

As risk factors for prediabetes are common, make sure to get the blood sugar levels monitored frequently. More thorough diagnostics are required for prediabetes because prediabetes tends to be asymptomatic. Often, all it takes is the removal of an outmoded negative belief to create a new and valuable one.

The same factors which increase the probability of diabetes type 2 also increase prediabetes risk. The following considerations include:

Obesity:  Obesity is a major contributor to the development of prediabetes. The more fatty tissue you have around your belly, mostly within and between the muscle and skin, the more insulin resistant your cells become.

Waist size: Insulin resistance may be shown by a wide waist circumference. Insulin resistance is more likely in men with waists greater than 40 inches and women with waists greater than 35 inches.

Maintaining a diet: The consumption of red and refined meat, as well as sugar-sweetened drinks, is linked to a higher incidence of prediabetes. A diet rich in fruits, berries, almonds, whole grains, and olive oil has been linked to a reduced chance of developing prediabetes.

Lack of physical activity: The less healthy you are, the higher your chances of developing prediabetes. Physical exercise helps you maintain a healthy weight, burns sugar for energy, and improves insulin sensitivity.

Individual’s age: Even though diabetes can strike at any age, the likelihood of prediabetes rises after the age of 45.

Family history: If you have a parent or relative that has type 2 diabetes, you’re more likely to develop prediabetes.

Ethnicity or race: While the cause is unknown, some ethnic groups, such as Black, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian Americans, are more likely to experience prediabetes.

Gestational diabetes (is a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy): You and your child are more likely to experience prediabetes if you have diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes). If you’ve had gestational diabetes, the doctor will most likely monitor your blood sugar levels every three years at the very least.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS): Prediabetes is more likely in women with this common disorder, which is marked by irregular menstrual cycles, excessive hair development, and obesity.

Sleep: Insulin resistance is more common in people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, a disease that causes sleep disruptions regularly.

Smoking: Tobacco smoke is one of the most dangerous substances on the planet. Insulin resistance can be exacerbated by smoking. In addition, smokers tend to be heavier in the stomach area.

The following are some of the other conditions linked to prediabetes:

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)

• Low levels of “healthy” cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol

• High triglyceride levels (a form of fat found in the blood)

These factors are linked to insulin resistance as they develop in conjunction with obesity.

What are the complications of prediabetes?

You’re more likely to have Type 2 diabetes if you have prediabetes. However, it places you at a higher risk of: Progression to type 2 diabetes is the most severe result of prediabetes. This is because type 2 diabetes will lead to the following complications:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Acute Stroke
  • Kidney problems
  • Limb amputations
  • Nerve Damage
  • Vision issues, including the possibility of vision loss

Prediabetes has been attributed to unidentified (silent) heart problems and will affect the kidneys, even though diabetes of type 2 has not advanced.

PREVENTION

Is it possible to prevent prediabetes?

Speak to the healthcare provider if you have diabetes or other metabolic disorders in your family. According to the researchers, precautions are recommended for prediabetes to be prevented.

A healthy choice of lifestyle will help avoid prediabetes and their advancement into type 2 diabetes — even though the family has diabetes. Try to do this:

  • Eat nutritious foods
  • Get moderate aerobic physical exercise for at least 150 minutes a week or for most of the week for about thirty minutes.
  • Reduce weight gain.
  • Don’t smoke
  • Check the cholesterol and blood pressure.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTS

How is prediabetes diagnosed?

Your doctor will use a blood test to test for prediabetes. You may have:

prediabetes-tests-Eliteayurveda
  • A fasting plasma glucose test is a blood test performed after an eight-hour fast (had nothing to eat or drink except water).
  • Oral glucose tolerance test: First, you’ll have a fasting plasma glucose test. Then, you’ll drink something sugary. Two hours after that, a technician will take and test more blood.

  • An A1C test will determine the average blood glucose level for the last two to three months.

You would be diagnosed with prediabetes if:

• Your fasting plasma glucose level is between 100 and 125 mg/dL (normal is 100; diabetes is 126 or more).

• Your Oral glucose tolerance test is 140 to 199 mg/dL after the second test

• Your A1c test is 5.7% to 6.4% mg/dL (normal is < 5.7%); diabetes is 6.5% or higher).

TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT

diabetes-treatments-eliteayurveda

How is prediabetes treated?

Healthy lifestyle changes are the most effective way to treat diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. Even minor improvements will reduce the chances of getting Type 2 diabetes.

  • Weight loss: Reduce weight by eating a balanced diet. Even losing 5% to 10% of your body weight will make a significant impact.
  • Regular exercise: Aim for 30 minutes of movement five days a week, for a total of 150 minutes. Try walking or another enjoyable sport.

Lowering your prediabetes risk factors will also help you get your blood sugar levels back to normal. You could:

  • Consult a therapist or dietitian to develop a long-term healthy eating strategy.
  • Look at ways to relieve or manage tension.
  • Stop smoking and Reduce
  • Recognize and address sleep problems.
  • Manage comorbid conditions including elevated cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • Join discussion groups to find individuals who are going through similar situations.

Prediabetes is a disease that affects a large number of people. It indicates that the blood sugar levels are elevated, but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes. It’s possible that you don’t have any signs of prediabetes. If you’re at high risk for diabetes, it’s important to speak to a doctor about having routine blood Tests.

The good thing is that prediabetes can be reversed and the ayurvedic approach has shown excellent results in treating people with diabetes by providing effective medications and therapies. Also, your blood sugar levels will be brought up to a healthier range by providing dietary and exercise protocols and help you in managing your weight, as well as other lifestyle improvements. Consult the doctor on ways to avoid or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes.
