- Apply ice to relieve pain and inflammation. Applying ice straight to the skin can cause skin and nerve ending damage. Use a towel or pillowcase as a barrier between your skin and the ice pack. Every two to four hours, apply ice for up to 20 minutes.
- If you do not have kidney problems, over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen may be beneficial. If you are unsure whether you should take this or any other medicine, see your doctor.
- Avoid twisting or bending your spine. When required, bend forward at the hips.
- Sleep in a position that is good for your back. Sleeping on your stomach might aggravate back pain.
- Stay mobile if feasible, and move slowly and carefully.
- Even if your back is feeling better, avoid hard lifting for up to six weeks.
- Take note of your posture. The way you sit, stand, or move may be contributing to your discomfort.
