Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a persistent skin ailment characterized by the formation of painful lumps beneath the skin. Foods can have a big impact on people with HS. The first thing a person should understand is that everyone has a unique body mechanism. As a result, just because one diet plan works for one individual does not indicate it will work for you. There is no specific diet recommended for the management of HS. Look for foods that are generating flare-ups and eliminate them before gradually reintroducing them.

Basically, foods that cause inflammation or activate an inflammatory response in the body are partially responsible for HS. As a result, it is an excellent choice to avoid meals that promote oxidative stress and hence inflammation in the body.

  • Sugary meals: Eating foods high in sugar content can raise blood glucose levels, causing HS flare-ups.
  • Red meat high in fat and processed (hot dog, sausage and bacon): Saturated fat, which is prevalent in processed meat, is a major source of inflammation.
  • Dairy products such as cow’s milk, cheese, cottage cheese, buttermilk, and butter contain a lot of saturated fats, which cause inflammation. They can also raise hormone levels, which can lead to HS. According to studies, persons who ate a dairy-free diet experienced fewer HS flare-ups.
  • Fries, fried chicken, and other deep-fried foods: Deep-fried foods can cause an imbalance of omega-6s and omega-3s, which can contribute to inflammation.
  • Wheat, rye, and barley all contain gluten, which can trigger an autoimmune inflammatory response in certain people.
  • Alcohol: Studies have indicated that avoiding alcohol reduces flare-ups in patients with HS.
  • Brewer’s yeast: According to research, brewer’s yeast might activate your immune system and cause HS. More proof is necessary to prove the same. However, it is advised to avoid foods containing brewer’s yeast, such as: Beer, Wine, Several soy sauces, canned or dry soups, Pizza, bread, and cakes, Salad dressings and vinegar

Some dietary supplements

The following are some of the most effective diets for minimising HS flare-ups:

The Mediterranean diet, which includes fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, fish, seafood, and extra virgin olive oil, has been demonstrated to reduce HS flare-ups.

Vegan or vegetarian diets that are plant-based: The human gut contains trillions of bacteria that work hard to keep us healthy. The more diversified an individual’s microorganisms, the healthier he or she is. Plant-based diets contain a wide range of microorganisms.

Diets that are anti-inflammatory: Inflammation is the body’s natural defence response against any foreign substance that it perceives as dangerous. If the body does not reduce inflammation, it might kill healthy cells. Anti-inflammatory foods, or meals that reduce inflammation, can lessen the degree of inflammation and lower the likelihood of HS flare-ups.

Furthermore, vitamins like vitamin D and zinc help to prevent HS flare-ups. Before using these supplements for HS treatment, consult with your doctor.

According to Ayurveda, hidradenitis suppurativa is a cause of Kapha and Pitta dosha. When the digestive fire (Agni), or Pitta, is out of balance, the Kapha Dosha becomes vitiated, which slows down metabolism. Due to the disruption of fat molecules, they start to build up in muscles and impede bodily passageways, causing painful, swollen sores in the groin, buttocks, thighs, and armpits.
