The Nervous System is a very complicated system in the body that regulates and coordinates the body’s basic functions and activities. A human’s entire body is controlled by the nervous system. It regulates the processes starting from digestion up to the endocrine function also everything depends upon the complex neurophysiology. It comprises two parts the Central Nervous System which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system which includes other neural elements.

Neurological disorders are medically defined as disorders that affect the brain as well as the nerves found throughout the human body and the spinal cord. According to Ayurveda, there are 7 types of Dhatu in the body. Amongst these, Majja Dhatu’s problems are related to neurological diseases. In the maximum cases, neurological diseases are considered under Vatavyadhi which are the problems associated with the imbalance of Vata dosha. The other two Doshas may be in frost along with complications with Dhatu and Mala. The neurological
disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and muscular dystrophy can be caused due to improper diet, wrong lifestyle, as well as due to genetic predisposition in some cases.

Over 80 types of neuro disorders have been acknowledged by Ayurveda, which include neurodegenerative diseases such as vatavyadhi which is influenced by the effect of vata dosha, which in turn is the major constituent of Tridosha, and determines a person’s basic constitution type called as Prakriti and holistically approaches for the treatment via medicinal plant. According to Ayurveda, there are three types of diseases that are manifested due to an imbalance in vata dosha.

1.Vata vriddhi – Neural hyperfunctioning

2.Vata kshaya – Neural hypofunctioning

3.Avarana – Masked functioning


The diseases caused due to imbalance in Vata dosha are usually incurable but Ayurveda provides some diverse treatments which include Panchakarma, yoga, massage, usage of herbal medicine, and a proper lifestyle, which can make life easier and increase life expectancy. “Satwavajaya” is a psychotherapy that is employed along with yoga in order to restore the memory, intellect, and fortitude of an individual.

“Marma” is a therapy in Ayurveda that is based on massaging 107 vital points of the body in order to treat diseases of nerves and brain which includes several types of paraplegia, hemiplegia, and monoplegia.

During the treatment of these diseases, Ayurveda considered all the psychosomatic traits for the selection of proper therapy. It also considers a person’s mental, physical, and emotional health, such that the person is not affected during the therapy.
