STRESS AND SKIN

Stress & skin

Stress is an inevitable part of everyday life, whether it is social, physical, or mental. It all begins in your head, but the effect is so strong that it spreads across your entire body. Although mild stress attributable to work or family problems may still be handled, the real problem occurs when it becomes chronic. Stress that lasts for a long time can mess with your immune system, digestive system, metabolism, and hormones.

Fewer people are conscious, however, that there is a direct connection between stress and skin problems. If your skin becomes painfully dry at times or you find unexplained rashes on your face, stress may be one of the triggers.

The connection between stress and your skin

You may have heard about the negative effects of stress on your physical and mental health, but did you know that stress may also cause a pimple to develop on your skin before a big event? Rashes or acne are the most common skin problems caused by prolonged stress, which can be triggered before a work interview or as a result of personal issues. If you already have skin issues like psoriasis or rosacea, the condition can get even worse.

Stress and skin issues are connected to each other in a variety of ways. When a person is nervous, the body produces adrenaline and free radicals, which cause the skin to become more sensitive and reactive. As a result, fatigue not only induces but also aggravates skin problems

Not only that but if you already have skin problems, stress can slow down or even exacerbate the healing process. It can also cause problems with your nails and hair.

Stress, particularly long-term stress, can hasten the aging of the skin. A hereditary predisposition to skin conditions like hives or acne affects around 10% of the population who experience some type of skin eruption. They are more likely to suffer from anxiety or depression, as well as develop a skin condition as a result of stress.

Easy ways to ease the effect of stress on your skin

Stress is certainly unavoidable but is not unmanageable. You cannot run away from it, but you can keep yourself calm, cool, and composed in all situations. To deal with the symptoms of stress on your skin, here are a few things you can do:

  •  Even if you are tired, swamped with work, or stressed, take good care of your skin. Neglecting it may be harmful to you.
  • One of the best ways to manage your stress level is practicing yoga or meditation. Take some time out to enjoy some quality time in your own company.
  • Sleep is another important aspect. A good quality sleep of 7-8 hours is important for your overall health and to manage your stress level.

Psychophysiological disorders are actual dermatologic conditions that are aggravated by emotional stressors. It is not to assume that anyone would develop a disease simply because they are emotionally or physically depressed, but a stressor that disrupts the patient’s homeostatic equilibrium may worsen a chronic condition.

Atopic dermatitis, acne, rosacea, herpes simplex, psoriasis, and hyperhidrosis are only a few of the things that people claim get worse when they’re nervous. When a patient presents with a flare, it is not unusual for them to mention a stressor in their daily life when asked.

Stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system, which are two main neural pathways. In response to stress, a slew of chemical signals is released.

Neurosensory signals enable the hypothalamus to release corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and vasopressin. The HPA axis is then activated by CRH, resulting in the release of adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH), which allows the adrenal cortex to secrete glucocorticoids and catecholamines.
